The Good and Gather line is a great way to save money at Target. This store brand features everything from snacks and sweets to frozen treats — all at affordable prices.

Whether it’s the taste, the texture, the packaging, or the price, you might want to steer clear of some of these generics. We’ve put together a list of our least favorite buys.

Roasted Artichoke and Spinach Hummus

Price: $3.29

While this hummus is creamy and smooth, it has more of a “spiced” flavor than artichoke and spinach. If you prefer a tangy taste over plain hummus, you may still enjoy this pick. But it isn’t necessarily the most affordable option.

Trader Joe’s sells a slightly smaller eight-ounce tub of roasted garlic hummus for $1 less ($2.29), and Walmart’s Marketside roasted red pepper 10-ounce container is only $2.87.

Low-Fat Milk

Courtesy of FinanceBuzz low fat milk

Price: $4.39

This one percent low-fat gallon of cow’s milk tastes like what you’d find in most grocery stores. And, while flavor isn’t a deal-breaker with this Good and Gather product, price is.

Compare Target’s $4.39 price tag to the lower $4.11 cost for the same product at Walmart. If you belong to Sam’s Club, you can save over $1 and snag a gallon of Member’s Mark for $3.18.

Turkey Burgers

Price: $8.99

These ready-made frozen turkey patties are convenient. But convenience doesn’t always equal value.

Even though they don’t contain hormones or steroids, they have added salt. Skip the extra sodium and try Good and Gather’s refrigerated 93/7 ground turkey burgers instead.

Cucumber Mint Sparkling Water

Price: $3.29

Good and Gather’s lineup of sparkling water is a beloved Target bargain buy. The strawberry mango flavor is sweet, the ginger peach has a zesty snap, and the watermelon lime is refreshing on a hot summer day.

But the same can’t be said for the cucumber mint option. This canned beverage could let you down if you’re expecting a spa water-like taste.

Instead of a subtle minty sip, this soda tastes more like toothpaste. Save your $3.29 and spend it on one of the other sparkling options.

Mixed Fruit Snacks

Price: $2.69

Target’s generic version of the popular fruit-packed snack doesn’t have the taste or price you could find somewhere else.

Walmart sells a 10-count box of the brand-name Welch’s version for $2.22. That’s over $0.40 less than what you would pay for the same quantity of Good and Gather snacks.

Signature Monterey Jack Cheese

Price: $3.29

Taste and quality aren’t issues with this Signature Monterey Jack cheese. At $3.29 for an eight-ounce block, this Good and Gather product is pricier than what you’d find at other retailers.

Swap out the Signature cheese for the standard Good and Gather Monetery Jack to keep your grocery budget in check. You’ll get the same savory taste for one dollar less.

Sweet and Spicy Tuna

Price: $0.99

Tuna purists may not know what to think of this flavor. The spice is on the mild side, making it less than desirable for mouth surfers. But the same isn’t true for the sweet side of the mix.

This taste is somewhat overwhelming. Instead of paying extra for a smaller pre-seasoned pack, choose a larger can of plain tuna (for $0.99) and add your own extras.

Organic Ultra-Thin Pizza Crusts

Courtesy of FinanceBuzz organic ultra thin pizza crusts

Price: $3.59

The price is right for this Good and Gather item. At $3.59 for two crusts, this is an affordable option — especially when you compare prices between make-at-home pies and takeout pizza.

If you’re looking for a base that feels more like a pita than a pizza, you’re in luck. But if you want something more substantial, swap out the ultra-thin Good and Gather crusts for the Market Pantry version.

Red Lentil Rotini

Courtesy of FinanceBuzz red lentil rotini

Price: $2.89

This lentil-based pasta is an affordable alternative for anyone who can’t have gluten. Shoppers who don’t need to eat a gluten-free diet may want to stick with regular rotini.

Not only does the red lentil pasta have an off taste, but it’s almost $2 more than Good and Gather’s gluten-containing version.

Flour Tortillas

Price: $3.29

Price is the major issue with these Good and Gather flour tortillas. For $3.29, you’ll only get six of the eight-inch organic tortillas.

Compare this to the $2.19 10-count from Target’s Market Pantry product line.

Bottom line

While we aren’t fans of these Good and Gather items, Target does pack this brand with plenty of bargain buys that loyal shoppers adore.

So, if taste, price, or another issue makes you want to pass on a product, you can easily find an alternative from the big red bullseye retailer.
