With the rise of online gaming came the fall of once-popular board games. While plenty of people still love to pull out the old Monopoly board or play a round of Scrabble with the family, this dip in popularity means some of those old games you have around the house could be worth serious cash today. If you've been brainstorming easy ways to pocket more cash, selling old toys and games on the resale market could be quite lucrative.

Some vintage games and rarities have been known to sell for more than $1,000. Check your closets and cupboards for these nine board games that could be worth a small fortune today.

3D Monopoly - New York City edition by Charles Fazzino

Estimated market value: $1,750

There are millions of versions of Monopoly boards available today, and most are not worth much. However, some limited releases and very old versions could net you a small fortune.

The New York City 3D edition, designed by Charles Fazzino, is one example. It was the first collectible 3D version of Monopoly designed to take players through NYC's landmarks. Only 2,000 were released, and if you happen to have one, you could be looking at a payday well over $1,000.

1966 Lost in Space 3D board game

Estimated market value: $360

The Lost in Space board game is based on the 1960s TV show of the same name, and because this retro 3D game is considered a rarity, it could sell for a few hundred dollars even if it's not in pristine condition.

Finding a version of the game with all its original pieces is extremely rare. So much so that one with most pieces is attracting plenty of attention on eBay, with an asking price approaching $400.

War in Europe board game

Estimated market value: $550

For strategy game enthusiasts, War in Europe is an incredibly complex and technical game that was originally released in the mid-1970s.

If you have one, collectors may be willing to pay close to $1,000 to take it off your hands.

1970s Disney 'Haunted Mansion' board game

Estimated market value: $220

In the 1970s, Disney released a game based on its popular "Haunted Mansion" ride. It's rare to find a game in good condition with all its original pieces, as the spooky board game came with plenty of moving parts and pieces that could be easily misplaced.

A version with several missing pieces is still attracting plenty of attention on eBay with a starting price of over $200.

1930s Monopoly board game

Estimated market value: $300

Monopoly was first released in the 1930s, and boards in decent condition from that era could be quite valuable. You could be looking at a payday of a few hundred dollars (at least) for these vintage gems.

A version on eBay in its original 1930s box, with the game's old wooden playing pieces, is listed for nearly $300. Well-preserved versions have been known to sell for more.

1974 Inflation board game

Estimated market value: $400

Inflation, released in the 1970s, had a similar model to Monopoly with the tagline, "Buy, sell, and trade your way to $1,000,000." Though the game was quite popular at the time, these original 1970s boards are considered rare today. A 1974 version with all its original pieces is currently listed on eBay for nearly $400.

Settlers of Catan - 3D edition

Estimated market value: $300

A 3D version of Settlers of Catan is considered quite valuable to collectors.

It is a rare edition that fans of the popular resource-gathering game may be willing to shell out big bucks for.

1981 Dark Tower board game

Dark Tower, a game centered around a light-up, functioning tower, was groundbreaking tech when it was first released. Finding the game with a working tower and all the original pieces is extremely rare and considered highly valuable for collectors.

Even a heavily used version with all its original pieces recently sold for about $400 on eBay.

Bottom line

Selling vintage items to collectors could be a relatively simple way to eliminate some money stress. However, it's important to do some research on value and what buyers have been willing to pay in the past before rolling the dice by listing your inventory on eBay.

Most vintage games aren't worth much today, even when well-preserved, but there are rarities, like the nine listed here, that could net you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
