For a growing number of experienced workers, the 9-to-5 is no longer the preferred path to achieve financial stability. Remote work normalized the idea that location doesn't have to dictate your career. The next shift is schedule flexibility: the ability to decide not just where you work, but when.
The catch is that not every "flexible remote job" actually delivers on that promise. Many are just traditional employment on a laptop. The roles below are different. They're built around outcomes, not office hours, and they pay $75 or more per hour for the right person. Here's what each one actually requires.

Fractional CFO / Financial consultant
Typical rate: $150-$500 per hour
This is the gold standard for finance professionals who want to go independent. Fractional CFOs serve multiple companies on a part-time or project basis, handling financial strategy, forecasting, fundraising preparation, and board reporting. Most clients are small-to-midsize businesses or startups that can't afford a full-time CFO.
Flexibility: Genuine. Most clients contract for 10 to 20 hours per month. You can serve multiple clients simultaneously. You decide when those hours happen.
Independent legal consultant
Typical rate: $150-$400 per hour
Attorneys who leave firm life for consulting typically work on discrete projects: contract review, regulatory compliance guidance, M&A due diligence support, or litigation strategy for in-house teams that need temporary senior capacity. This is not document review work, which pays far less.
Flexibility: High for project-based work; lower for retainer arrangements with in-house teams.
Health care IT / Clinical informatics consultant
Typical rate: $85-$175 per hour
Hospitals, health systems, and digital health companies need consultants who understand both how care is delivered and the technology that supports it. Projects often include implementing or improving electronic health record systems (like Epic or Cerner), helping different systems share data, and making sure everything meets strict health care privacy and compliance rules.
Flexibility: True flexibility when remote. On-site presence may be required during go-live periods, which can compress schedules significantly for those weeks.
Regulatory affairs consultant
Typical rate: $100-$200 per hour
Pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies need regulatory expertise throughout product development. These consultants help companies get products approved by agencies like the FDA. This is deep specialist work that generalist consultants cannot replicate.
Flexibility: Excellent. Regulatory writing and submission preparation are asynchronous by nature. Agency review timelines mean most work can be done on your schedule.
Senior UX researcher
Typical rate: $120-$180 per hour
UX researchers help companies understand how real users interact with their products, from apps and websites to complex software platforms. They design and run studies to uncover what's working, what's confusing, and what needs to change.
A note on rates: the average freelance UX researcher may earn less than $75 per hour. The roles that clear this threshold consistently are senior researchers with demonstrated expertise in specific methods or specific sectors like health care UX or fintech.
Flexibility: Moderate. Study windows require participant scheduling and synchronous moderation sessions. Outside of fieldwork periods, things are highly flexible.
Medical / Regulatory writer
Typical rate: $90-$130 per hour
Medical writers in this niche create the detailed documents that pharmaceutical and biotech companies need to get drugs and treatments approved. That includes summarizing clinical trial results, preparing reports for regulators, and turning complex scientific data into structured, compliant documentation.
Medical writers who specialize in regulatory submissions command rates well above general technical writing. This is distinct from health/wellness content writing, which pays far less.
Flexibility: Excellent. Regulatory writing is asynchronous by nature. Submission deadlines drive occasional crunch periods, but the day-to-day schedule is genuinely self-directed.
B2B marketing copywriter
Typical rate: $100-$149 per hour
Generic B2B copywriting does not reliably command $75+/hour. What does: marketing copy that directly drives sales — like landing pages, email campaigns, and website messaging designed to turn readers into customers. These are strategic communication projects, not commodity content.
Flexibility: True flexibility once you have established clients. Project-based work means you deliver a finished asset by an agreed deadline — how and when you produce it is entirely up to you.
Senior instructional designer
Typical rate: $75+ per hour
Instructional designers create training programs, courses, and learning materials for companies. Like technical writing, general instructional design rates may be well below $75 per hour. The roles that clear this threshold are expert senior practitioners who specialize in high-stakes training environments: compliance training for regulated industries, leadership development programs for Fortune 500 companies, or complex certification curricula.
Flexibility: High. Instructional design is deliverable-based and almost entirely asynchronous. Most senior consultants work on multiple concurrent projects across clients.
Executive / Leadership coach
Typical rate: $200-$600 per hour
Executive coaches work with senior leaders, C-suite executives, and high-potential managers on improving leadership development, career transitions, and executive presence. Rates at this tier require positioning, credentialing, and a niche. Coaches who try to serve everyone may earn far less than those who specialize in a niche, such as new CEOs, women in leadership, or executive communication.
Flexibility: High. You set your coaching schedule, book sessions when it suits you, and take weeks off without asking anyone's permission.

Independent data / Analytics consultant
Typical rate: $100-$250 per hour
Data consultants help companies make sense of their numbers and use them to make better decisions.
Demand is especially strong for consultants who can step in and do the work of a senior analyst without requiring a full-time hire, whether that's helping a company understand where its revenue is coming from or how its marketing campaigns are performing.
Flexibility: High once you're established in project-based work. You pull data, build models, and deliver outputs on your own timeline.
Bottom line
The common thread in every role above is that you're selling expertise, not availability. That distinction is what makes genuine schedule flexibility possible.
None of these are easy. But for the right professional, any one of them may boost your bank account while leaving Tuesday afternoons and most of August to you.
