Not every lucrative career comes with a glamorous job title. Sometimes the best way to get ahead financially is to look past the excitement factor and zero in on what really matters: strong pay, steady demand, and long-term job security. Plenty of positions flying under the radar check all three boxes; they just don't make for interesting small talk.

Here are nine fast-growing jobs that pay at least $59 an hour, which works out to roughly $122,720 a year.

Median hourly wage: $60.47

Actuaries spend their days analyzing financial risk using math, statistics, and probability models. The work is methodical and largely desk-bound, which is exactly why it tends to fly under the radar.

But the pay is far from ordinary, and employment of actuaries is projected to grow 22% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Information security analysts

Median hourly wage: $60.05

Information security analysts monitor networks, respond to breaches, and design systems to keep organizational data safe. The work is often invisible when done well, which makes it easy to overlook.

Employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 29% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations, driven in large part by the growing volume and cost of cyberattacks.

Data scientists

Median hourly wage: $54.13 (mean: $59.90)

Data scientists collect, clean, and analyze large datasets to uncover patterns and guide business decisions. Much of the job involves staring at code and spreadsheets.

Employment of data scientists is projected to grow 34% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations, driven by growing demand for data-driven decision-making across virtually every industry. The mean hourly wage tops $59.

Financial managers

Median hourly wage: $77.74

Financial managers direct the financial activities of an organization. They oversee budgets, produce reports, and guide investment strategy. It's important work, but it rarely involves much excitement.

The BLS projects employment growth of 15% through 2034, well above the national average, as organizations of all sizes increasingly rely on financial expertise to navigate complexity.

Computer and information systems managers

Median hourly wage: $82.31

These managers plan and oversee their organization's technology infrastructure, including coordinating IT teams, evaluating systems, and making sure everything runs without incident. The job is inherently behind the scenes.

The BLS reports a median hourly wage above $82, and demand for this role is growing 15% as technology becomes central to operations in every sector.

Architectural and engineering managers

Median hourly wage: $80.64

Architectural and engineering managers coordinate technical projects, oversee staff, and manage budgets within engineering and design departments. The role is heavy on planning, compliance, and logistics — not the kind of work that gets covered in business magazines.

With a median hourly wage over $80, it's among the better-compensated management positions in the country.

Nurse anesthetists

Median hourly wage: $107.31

Administering anesthesia and monitoring patients throughout surgical procedures is not most people's idea of a thrilling career. It's highly precise, intensely focused work with little room for error or improvisation.

Overall employment of nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners is projected to grow 35% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. Nurse anesthetists specifically rank among the highest-paid advanced practice roles in health care.

Computer and information research scientists

Median hourly wage: $67.74

These researchers develop new computing theories, design algorithms, and solve complex technical problems, often spending long stretches working independently on problems that don't have obvious real-world applications, at least not immediately.

The BLS reports a median hourly wage of $67.74 and projects much-faster-than-average job growth of 20% through 2034, fueled by demand for AI and machine learning research.

Natural sciences managers

Median hourly wage: $77.49

Natural sciences managers supervise scientists and coordinate research in fields like biology, chemistry, and physics. Their days consist largely of project planning, budget oversight, and staff management — unglamorous work, but work that commands strong pay.

The BLS reports a median pay per hour of over $77 and a mean hourly wage above $83. Demand is steady across pharmaceutical, environmental, and government research sectors.
