A new job with better pay or benefits could be the best way to lower your financial stress. But if you're like most people nearing retirement (or if you're already in soft-retirement mode), you might worry your age disqualifies you from making a career move that could boost your bottom line.

The companies listed below see wisdom and experience as the benefits of age, and they're eager to hire workers like you. Best of all, many of them offer hourly wages between $18 and $23 for certain roles, giving you a leg up on growing your retirement savings before you leave the workforce or supplementing your fixed income if you've left your career behind.

CVS Health
CVS Health actively cultivates an inclusive, diverse culture where older workers are welcome, making a particularly hard effort to hire veterans as well as disabled individuals. While CVS no longer touts the "Talent is Ageless" program that focused on hiring older workers, it does have over a dozen Colleague Resource Groups to support minority workers, plus local workforce initiatives tailored to individual communities.
CVS hires for a wide range of roles, from pharmacists and doctors to cashiers and customer service workers, so starting pay could range quite a bit depending on your experience. Even entry-level jobs for beginning store associates pay up to $24 an hour for part-time work.
Home Depot
More than 20 years ago, Home Depot became one of the first major companies to partner with AARP to train workers 50 and older to fill the store's 35,000 new positions. If you look around at the staff the next time you visit Home Depot, you can see that the company's long history of recruiting experienced workers has helped establish its reputation as an age-inclusive employer.
Pay varies by location, but some current freight and receiving positions offer around $20 an hour or more.
Walmart
Walmart's career site emphasizes that the company's "values ground every decision and help us build a workplace where everyone belongs and has the chance to thrive." Door greeters, cashiers, and customer service associate jobs may appeal to seniors who prefer to work part-time and want to spend their work hours interacting with other people.
Walmart says its average U.S. hourly field associate earns $18.25 an hour, while supply chain associates average about $27 an hour.
UnitedHealth Group
Inclusion is one of the top company values at UnitedHealth Group. Like CVS, UnitedHealth Group invests heavily in military veterans and their families, partnering with multiple military organizations to ensure veterans of all ages can thrive at work. The company's Employer Resource Groups help employees find and support each other.
Current customer service representative listings show hourly pay ranges of $16 to $29, depending on factors such as location and experience.
U.S. Postal Service
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has fantastic benefits for savings-focused near-retirees. Eligible career employees can participate in the federal retirement program, which includes a defined-benefit annuity, along with the Thrift Savings Plan.
USPS jobs could include working at a busy front desk, sorting mail in the back room, or walking quietly for hours while distributing the mail. With such diverse work environments, it shouldn't be too hard to find a role that suits your unique skillset and matches your lifestyle.
Ace Hardware
Working for Ace Hardware could mean doing hands-on repairs and maintenance on HVAC units, answering customer calls, managing vendors, or handling the cash register. No matter which type of position you're looking for, Ace focuses on giving its workers the institutional support they need to thrive in a new career.
Like many corporations on this list, Ace Hardware used to be showcased on AARP's Employer Pledge job board, which listed companies that had committed to actively hiring and supporting older workers. The Employer Pledge was replaced with the Employer Alliance in March 2026, and AARP now focuses on teaching businesses how to attract workers age 50+ rather than advertising those businesses to seniors directly.
Ace Hardware has previously participated in AARP's efforts to promote age-inclusive hiring. While AARP replaced its Employer Pledge Program with the Employer Alliance in March 2026, job seekers can still use AARP and Indeed's employment resources to search for opportunities that may suit experienced workers.
Bottom line
Even if you aren't actively looking for a new job, jumping onto the AARP/Indeed job board to find senior-friendly employers in your spare time may help you prepare yourself financially for unexpected financial hardships. At the very least, you'll have a curated list of senior-friendly companies you can apply for as needed. And at best, you won't be left scrambling if your savings need an unexpected boost or your career field takes a turn for the worse.
Remember too that part-time and seasonal roles can be senior-friendly options, even at companies that haven't signed onto AARP's Employer Alliance. These types of jobs can temporarily supplement your retirement savings without forcing you back into full-time work, and employers may value candidates who have flexible availability, particularly for part-time, seasonal, evening, or weekend shifts.
