Let's face it: no one likes to be bored at work. Boring work makes your days drag, and because of the fear of monotony, you might also be overlooking some of the best job opportunities out there. While flashy, high-profile careers with fancy titles tend to get all the attention, many quieter and less "exciting" jobs pay $71 an hour or more.

Even more surprising: a number of these roles are facing worker shortages, as younger generations often opt for trendier paths. That combination (strong pay and low competition) makes these jobs especially appealing right now.

Here are 10 jobs that may seem "boring" and are anything but when it comes to the pay.

Median hourly wage: $71.44

Lawyers spend much of their day reviewing documents, researching the law, and drafting contracts. This work, while often repetitive and detail-heavy, is not as exciting as the courtroom drama you see in the movies. According to the BLS, employment growth is steady, projected at 4% from 2024 to 2034. So, if you are down to do the time for the education (doctorate level, typically), a career in law could be for you.

Podiatrist

Median hourly wage: $73.46

The thought of being a doctor may excite some. However, a Podiatrist (a doctor who diagnoses and treats foot and ankle conditions) may be on the more boring side of the practice. Much of the work is routine: examining patients, managing chronic issues, and performing procedures, which can feel quite repetitive.

According to the BLS, employment is projected to grow 2% by 2034, reflecting limited but steady demand. As for most doctors and physicians, a doctorate and advanced practice are required.

Computer hardware engineer

Median hourly wage: $74.53

Computer hardware engineers design, test, and improve a variety of computer components. Most of their day is spent either at a desk or in a lab, analyzing schematics and running simulations. This quiet and methodical work may be equated with "boring."

Despite this, employment is projected to grow 7% from 2024 to 2034, per the most recent BLS data. The steady demand is intriguing, as it requires only a Bachelor's degree, too.

Advertising, promotions, and marketing manager

Median hourly wage: $76.76

Marketing is another field that typically only requires a Bachelor's degree. These managers plan campaigns, analyze market trends, and coordinate teams to promote products or services. Much of the work is behind a desk, reviewing reports and presentations, making it less exciting day-to-day, hence "boring" to some.

According to the BLS, employment is projected to grow 6% from 2024 to 2034, which is faster than average and shows demand in business and marketing sectors.

Natural sciences manager

Median hourly wage: $77.49

Natural sciences managers oversee research teams, budgets, and project timelines across fields like biology or chemistry. Much of the work can seem structured and repetitive…or "boring."

According to the BLS, employment demand is steady and projected to grow 4% from 2024 to 2034. Most roles require at least a bachelor's degree, with many managers holding advanced degrees and prior research experience.

Financial manager

Median hourly wage: $77.74

Financial managers oversee an organization's budgets, investments, and financial reporting. Much of the role involves analyzing spreadsheets, preparing reports, and monitoring compliance. These tasks are steady but not flashy, which some may find "boring."

According to the BLS, employment is projected to grow 15% from 2024 to 2034, faster than average. Typically, a bachelor's degree is all that is needed to land a job as a financial manager. Although some build experience in sales positions and earn their place without a bachelor's degree.

Median hourly wage: $79.95

Despite sounding highly technical, to be a physicist is hardly flashy. Day-to-day involves methodical research, data analysis, and long periods of independent work. This monotonous work is part of why it's often overlooked.

Yet according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth outlook for physicists is labeled "as fast as average," which is actually part of what makes the field appealing. Note that you will typically need a Doctorate to gain experience in the field, though.

Architectural and engineering manager

Architectural and engineering managers plan, coordinate, and oversee engineering or architectural projects. Much of their day has tasks that are methodical and often considered "boring" compared with hands-on design work.

Computer and information systems manager

Median hourly wage: $82.31

CIS managers oversee IT operations, budgets, and system security, and typically a bachelor's degree is required. The work is largely administrative, which can feel repetitive and "boring" compared to hands-on tech roles. According to the BLS, employment is projected to grow rapidly: 15% from 2024 to 2034, which is much faster than average.

High pay doesn't always come with excitement. And these jobs offer $71+ an hour, partially because they may not be the most exciting. Instead, they are steady, specialized, and less competitive, all factors adding to the high pay.
