10 Dimes That Are Worth Way More Than 10 Cents

There are an array of ways to make extra money online, from selling your vintage clothing, furniture, and toys to offering freelance services like writing or graphic design. You may also be able to make serious money off money you already have in your change drawer by way of reselling valuable collectible coins.

Some rare coins have been known to sell for hundreds (even thousands) of dollars. So, check your change drawer, look between the couch cushions, and dump your wallet to look for these 10 dimes.

Some dimes produced in Philadelphia featuring former president Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1965 were not minted with the normal "P," and may be worth some serious dough if you find a dime in excellent condition. 

Of particular value are ones with full bands (horizontal bands across the torch on the back of the coin) or a printing error where a bit of copper shows through the nickel exterior.

While dimes from this year are typically worth only slightly more than their face value, there have been stories of some going for more than $1,000.

In 1965, the U.S. transitioned from creating dimes that were made of 90% silver to coins that were made of copper and nickel instead. Even though silver was supposed to be phased out, a few silver dimes still made it into circulation.

If you have one, it could be worth a few thousand dollars, with one even selling at auction for more than $8,000 in 2019.

It's harder to come by dimes from the 19th century, but not impossible. And if you happen to have an 1871-CC coin, you could be looking at a payout of more than $200,000.

The design features a seated Lady Liberty and has a CC stamped on the back beneath the center for the wreath.

These days, it's estimated that only a little over 100 of these dimes are still around. One sold for more than $270,000 back in 2014.

These unique Roosevelt dimes may not be quite as valuable as others on this list, but may be easier to find, and they are certainly more valuable than 10 cents.

A few dimes printed in 1970 were mistakenly made without a mint mark. This unique feature makes them a valuable collector's item, and you could be looking at a payday of a couple of hundred dollars if you have one.

Some dimes made in 1982 and 1983 did not get mint marks, making them somewhat valuable to collectors.

If you happen upon a Roosevelt dime from either year that does not have a letter under the former president's portrait, it could be worth hundreds of times more than its original value.

Early 20th-century dimes could be worth a pretty penny these days. About 10 million of these Mercury dimes, which feature Lady Liberty with a winged headdress, were minted, but it's hard to find them in good condition.

A Mercury dime in good condition could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, with one selling at auction in 2000 for more than $218,000.

These dimes were created specifically to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime design. Since relatively few of these dimes were minted — and they were produced at the West Point facility — their rarity adds to the 1996 coin's value.

According to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a standard 1996-W Roosevelt dime typically goes for about $50, but some collectors are willing to pay much more.

This one is not a guaranteed pay day, but the 2020-D Roosevelt dime was reportedly minted less than in other years. Because fewer 2020 dimes were produced, and the year of the pandemic marks a historic moment, these coins could hold added value for collectors.

One of these dimes sold for $338 on eBay in 2021, although you're more likely to net around $15 for these coins.

If you happen to be in possession of an extremely old dime from more than 200 years ago, you could be looking at a big payday regardless of the coin's condition.

This dime from 1800 features Lady Liberty with a ribbon in her hair and is thought to be extremely rare, with only about 200 in any condition surviving today. One of these coins in clean condition sold for $192,000 back in 2022.

During World War II, some Mercury dimes were struck with both 1941 and 1942 dates in the Denver mint. If you happen to find one of these rarities, it's likely worth a few hundred bucks.

Currently, PCGS lists one of these on its website with a price tag over $300. A coin in great condition could go for much more; a mint condition version of the overdate Mercury dime sold for more than $25,000 back in 2016.

While it's rare to find a dime or any coin worth thousands of dollars, it does happen. Carefully assessing the coins you have in your change jar could be a surprisingly simple way to eliminate some money stress.

Before you head to eBay or another online reseller to hawk your coins, make sure you carefully assess their value. Pay close attention to the date, mintmarks, and condition, and consider consulting an appraiser (online or in-person) to see how much potential value you could be sitting on.
