  • 390 Washington Street, Wellesley
  • 455 Main Street, Wilbraham

Massachusetts has the second-highest number of Citizens Bank locations, with 192 branches, which may be why it will see multiple closures.

Boston, in particular, had 16 branches before the closure of the Commonwealth Avenue location.

Michigan

  • 19307 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods

The Grosse Pointe Woods location is the only Citizens Bank branch out of 68 branches in Michigan to close so far.

Customers who frequent the Grosse Pointe Woods can go to the nearby Citizens Bank branch in Grosse Pointe, which will remain open.

New Hampshire

  • 199 State Route 101, Manchester

New Hampshire residents have two fewer locations for in-person banking.

The Goffstown branch is the only one in that city, leaving the town without a Citizens Bank branch, while Manchester’s branch loss still leaves four branches in the city.

The Citizens Bank branch closings are part of a long list of bank branches that have shut down in New Jersey.

The state has also lost branches for Bank of America, Fulton Bank, TD Bank, and Wells Fargo.

New York

The Niagara Falls location is the latest to close in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. In February, the company shut down a branch in nearby Hamburg.

Citizens Bank also converted three branches to Citizens Express locations. These locations have ATMs with virtual assistants to help out with other transactions.

Ohio

The Akron branch closing is the latest in the greater Cleveland area.

Since 2020, the area has seen more than 150 bank branches close, with Huntington National Bank having the highest number of closures.

During that time, Huntington closed 70 branches compared to only nine branches by Citizens Bank.

Pennsylvania

  • 11000 Roosevelt Boulevard, Philadelphia
  • 5301 Grove Road, Pittsburgh
  • 153 West Orange Street, Shippensburg
  • 824 Street Road, Warminster

Pennsylvania has the most Citizens Bank locations, which may explain why it has been targeted with the most closures.

Eight of the 233 branches will be closing down, with two in the Pittsburgh area.

Another branch that learned its fate was in Shippensburg, which has announced that April 24 will be the last day it does business at that location.

Other banks closing branches

Citizens Bank is not alone. Other financial institutions have shut down branches throughout the country for various reasons. Some states are being hit harder than others.

PNC Bank, for example, is also closing branches in Pennsylvania. The banking company has closed 10 branches so far in 2024, four of which are in the Keystone State.

Why are banks closing branches?

So why the trend in bank closures? One of the biggest reasons is online banking.

Customers are moving more of their banking needs online, such as depositing checks, reviewing account balances, and more. That means some banks don’t need as many brick-and-mortar locations anymore.

The pandemic also sped up the process of customers going online to do their banking while banks were closed for in-person deposits and meetings, pushing users to do their banking on a bank’s website.
