In this Walmart Rewards Card review:

Who should get the Walmart Rewards Card?

The Walmart Rewards Card is specifically designed for loyal Walmart shoppers. It’s a closed-looped credit card, which means it’s a store credit card that can only be used within the Walmart brands.

On the plus side, that does include online purchases made on Walmart.com and through the app (even if you’re planning to do Grocery Pickup or Delivery), as well as shopping you do in-store at Sam’s Club and Sam’s Club-branded fuel stations. The card is not a good card if you’re looking for an all-purpose credit card that can be used anywhere, though.

On the other hand, if the thought of earning cashback at Walmart excites you, then you should take a hard look at this new store credit card. Store cards generally don't require excellent credit, which could be useful if you have little to no credit history or even bad credit. And with responsible use, a store card might help you improve your credit score over time.

Another thing to know is that the Walmart Rewards Card was created in partnership with Capital One and allows access to some of the bank’s features, including its mobile app. If you are a fan of Capital One or already have a Capital One account, it may also make sense to get this card.

If you’re looking for a credit card that earns rewards that can be used for travel, this isn’t the card for you. Redemption options are limited to statement credits, purchases, and gift cards within Walmart.

Walmart Rewards Card benefits and perks

  • Generous welcome offer: The first year you have this card is especially beneficial for in-store purchases. Earn 5% back on purchases in Walmart stores for the first 12 months when you use this card with Walmart Pay.
  • Valuable cash back: Cardmembers can earn 5% back on Walmart.com and the Walmart app and 2% back in Walmart stores and at Walmart and Murphy USA gas stations.
  • No caps: Enjoy unlimited rewards earning with your Walmart credit card. There are no spending caps to worry about.
  • No expiration: Rewards from the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card also never expire. They are good as long as your account is open.
  • No annual fee: The Walmart Rewards Card has a $0 annual fee, which means you don't need to worry about an added cost.

Drawbacks to the Walmart Rewards Card

  • Limited use: Since the Walmart Rewards Card is a store credit card, you can only use it at stores within the Walmart family of brands.
  • No intro APR: Many credit cards offer a 0% introductory APR on purchases or balance transfers for a set time period before the regular APR kicks in. But the Walmart Rewards Card isn't a 0% APR credit card, so it does not offer this benefit.
  • No balance transfers or cash advances: In addition to not offering an intro APR, this card doesn't allow you to do balance transfers at all. Cardholders also can't take cash advances, though these generally aren't recommended due to the potential for high interest rates and fees.

Earning and redeeming cash back at Walmart

Best ways to earn

Since this credit card can only be used within the Walmart family of brands, rewards earning is limited as well. Cardholders can earn cash back on purchases made through Walmart.com and the Walmart mobile app, with grocery pickup and delivery included. As mentioned before, as a new cardholder you’ll also get accelerated cashback rewards for in-store purchases made through Walmart Pay, though this perk will end 10/14/20.

In-store purchases made using a method other than Walmart Pay, as well as Walmart and Murphy USA gas station purchases, earn 2% back. In-store purchases at Sam's Club and Sam's Club-branded gas stations earn 1% cash back.

Categories Rewards rate
Walmart.com and the Walmart app 5%
Walmart stores and at Walmart and Murphy USA gas stations 2%
In-store purchases at Sam's Club and Sam's Club-branded gas stations 1%

Maximizing your redemptions

Redemptions are limited to use within Walmart. Rewards earned with the Walmart Rewards Card can be redeemed for statement credits, during checkout on Walmart.com, or for in-store Walmart purchases. Another option is to use your Walmart rewards for gift cards from Walmart and other retailers. Redemptions can be made through the desktop portal or through the Capital One mobile app.

If you're looking for more flexibility, the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card, the alternative to the Walmart Rewards Card, also lets you redeem your rewards for flights, hotels, and car rentals.

Walmart Rewards Card FAQs

Is the Walmart credit card good?

The Walmart Rewards Card could be a good option if you are a regular Walmart shopper and want to earn cash back on Walmart purchases. It can only be used within the Walmart family of brands, though, so it’s not a good credit card for everyday spending or for use outside of Walmart.

What bank issues the Walmart Rewards Card?

The Walmart Rewards Card is issued by Capital One in partnership with Walmart.

Does a Walmart credit card build credit?

Your Walmart credit card could potentially help you build credit and improve your credit score. Capital One reports cardholders' payment history to the three major credit bureaus, so it will show up on your credit reports. If you make full, on-time payments each month, your FICO score might improve over time.

What is the maximum credit limit on the Walmart Rewards Card?

With the Walmart Rewards Card, your credit limit is determined by a credit check and information provided on your application. The maximum credit limit has not been disclosed, but the minimum credit line is $300 if you are approved for the card.

Which credit cards earn cash back at Walmart?

In addition to the Walmart Rewards Card and the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard, these rewards credit cards could also help you earn cash back at Walmart:

Other cards to consider

The best credit card for you will depend on your personal finance situation and goals, and the Walmart Rewards Card might not be the right option for everyone. If you want to earn rewards for Walmart purchases, but still use your card outside of the store, check out the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard. This credit card offers 5% back at Walmart.com, on the Walmart app, and on Walmart pickup and delivery; 2% back in Walmart stores, at Walmart and Murphy USA gas stations, on gift cards at Walmart, and on restaurant and travel purchases; and 1% back on everything else. Unlike the Walmart Rewards Card, you can earn on all your purchases, plus redeem rewards for travel. This Capital One card also has a $0 annual fee.
