Is TD Bank good for you?

If you're located on the East Coast and want access to in-person service, Toronto Dominion (TD) Bank could be a good option for you. The bank has 1,100 branches and 2,600 ATMs across 15 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.). This bank could also be a smart choice if earning interest is important to you. It offers an interest-bearing checking account option and a savings account with an APY that's much higher than some of its competitors.

When TD Bank might not be good for you

Meanwhile, if you live in the Midwest or on the West Coast and want access to brick-and-mortar branches, TD likely isn't going to be a good fit as it doesn't have any locations in those areas. Similarly, if you want access to the absolute highest rates possible, you may want to look into online banks instead. These banks tend to be able to offer customers higher rates than brick-and-mortar banks because they have fewer overhead expenses.

TD Bank offers three checking account options. Let's take a closer look at each one.

TD Essential Banking

In my opinion, TD's Essential Banking account is a good choice for kids because the bank waives its monthly maintenance fee for customers under age 18. This checkless account comes with no overdraft services or fees, so you can spend only as much as your current balance.

TD Complete Checking

The TD Complete Checking account is a decent checking account for anyone because it features no minimum opening deposit, three ways to waive its monthly maintenance fee, and overdraft protection.

But it's an especially good checking account for students and seniors because customers between the ages of 17-23 get monthly maintenance and out-of-network ATM fees waived, while primary account holders aged 60 and up have access to free standard checks and paper statements.

TD Beyond Checking

If you plan on maintaining higher account balances, TD Bank's Beyond Checking account may be worth it. At $25, the monthly maintenance fee is fairly steep, but it can be waived if you keep a daily balance of $2,500 in the account or meet the bank's other criteria.

In exchange, this checking account earns interest. Plus, you'll gain access to fee reimbursements on a variety of activities, including overdrafts, rush bill pay, and outgoing wires. You may also qualify for reimbursement on out-of-network ATM fees.

Other checking accounts we recommend

If none of TD's accounts are right for you, consider Bank of America. Many of its offerings are similar to TD Bank's. However, in particular, its Advantage Plus Banking account rivals TD's Complete Checking account and comes with a lower $12 monthly maintenance fee.

TD Bank savings

TD Simple Savings TD Signature Savings
APY 0.02% (as of 4/9/2026) Up to 2.50% (as of 4/9/2026)
Minimum deposit $0 $0
Monthly maintenance fee $5 (can be waived) $15 (can be waived)
Monthly transaction limits No No
Cash access No No

The bank also provides two distinct savings account options.

TD Simple Savings

The TD Simple Savings account has a nominal annual percentage yield (APY) of 0.02% (as of 4/9/2026).

In my experience, you'll likely be able to find a better rate elsewhere, especially if you look for high yield savings accounts (HYSAs).

However, if the APY isn't your main focus, it's not a bad option. This account comes with a $0 minimum opening deposit and a small $5 monthly maintenance fee that can be waived by either maintaining a $300 daily balance or by being a senior or a minor.

TD Signature Savings

For its part, TD's Signature Savings account boasts a much better rate, if you have enough money in your savings to make it happen. The account features tiered rates, so your APY depends on how much money you keep in the account. You can earn up to 2.50% (as of 4/9/2026) with a balance of at least $250,000.

Besides the rate, the account comes with a $0 minimum opening deposit and a $15 monthly maintenance fee, which can be waived by keeping a daily balance of at least $10,000 or a linked TD checking account.

Other savings accounts we recommend

While TD's Signature Savings rate of up to 2.50% (as of 4/9/2026) is fairly decent compared to the current national average of 0.39% (as of 2/17/26), other banks will let you earn more. For example, Marcus currently offers a 3.65% APY on its Online Savings account, and Capital One advertises a rate of 3.20% APY on its Performance Savings.

Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are all brick-and-mortar banking giants like TD. If TD Bank isn't right for you, here are some strong points to consider about each of these alternatives.

  • Chase: With 5,000 branch locations and 14,000 ATMs, Chase has the best branch and ATM access for those who want in-person service.
  • Bank of America: Bank of America is the only big bank, aside from TD, to let you earn interest on certain checking account balances.
  • Wells Fargo: Extending all the way from 0.01% - 0.05% (as of 4/10/26), Wells Fargo's Platinum Savings relationship APY outpaces the other alternatives, but it still doesn't come close to touching TD's potential rate of up to 2.50% (as of 4/9/2026) on the TD Signature Savings account..

Customer experience and user sentiment

Reviews and complaints

With only 1.5 stars on Trustpilot and no accreditation on the Better Business Bureau, you may feel that it's hard to trust TD Bank. However, keep in mind that this rating is actually on par with the ratings for the other big banks we listed in the alternatives section above.

Still, many customers complain about the bank's processes, citing issues with individual transactions ranging from lost debit cards to maintenance fee mistakes. Meanwhile, customer service reviews are mixed.

Customer support

TD Bank's customer support options are fairly robust compared to other banks. The bank offers a 24/7 customer support phone line, a help center, and a virtual assistant that can answer frequently asked questions. If you know which department you're looking for, it also offers direct numbers for some of them, although service hours for those lines may vary.

Mobile banking app

The TD Bank mobile App has 4.8/5 stars on Apple and 4.1/5 stars on Android. Apple users seem to be pleased with the app's functionality overall, while some Android users complain that the app freezes or takes forever to open.

TD Bank fees

TD Bank
Overdraft fee $35
Insufficient funds fee None
Cash deposit fee None
ATM fees
  • TD ATM: $0
  • Non-TD ATM: $3
Excess transaction fee $3
Stop payment fee $30
Foreign transaction fee 3% of transaction amount
Wire transfer fees
  • Incoming: $15
  • Outgoing (Domestic): $30
  • Outgoing (International): $50

Overall, my feelings on TD Bank's fees are mixed. On the one hand, the bank doesn't impose an insufficient funds or cash deposit fee, which might be nice if you've had a tendency to run up those fees at other banks. However, some of its fees are fairly steep compared to its competitors. For example, Bank of America's international outgoing wire fee is only $45, and its overdraft fee is only $10 when charged.
