Huntington Bank

OUR VIEW

Best for Midwesterners looking to do all their banking with one institution

Huntington Bank is an Ohio-based regional bank with a massive Midwest presence that can be a great choice for savers living within the bank’s 14-state footprint. It offers a variety of checking accounts, two savings accounts, dozens of CD terms, and money market accounts. Some accounts are monthly fee-free, and others provide options to waive monthly fees while earning interest.

The bank’s relationship accounts tend to offer higher yields compared to its standard and promotional rates, some of which are not very competitive. However, Huntington’s checking accounts offer a lot of solid features and perks, including a 24-hour grace period on overdrafts, Zelle, and early direct deposit.

Huntington’s relationship banking perks and branch presence lead us to recommend this bank for Midwesterners looking to manage their finances all in one place.

Pros

Robust offering of checking account perks
Focus on relationship banking
Provides helpful ways to avoid overdraft fees
Wide range of CD terms

Cons

Most CD rates are low, except for a few terms with promotional rates
Both savings accounts come with monthly fees that have certain requirements to be waived and low standard rates
Banking products are available in only 14 states, mainly in the Midwest
A steep minimum of $25,000 is required to open a money market account

How we reviewed Huntington Bank

To review Huntington Bank, we evaluated its full range of personal banking products — including checking, savings, CDs, and money market accounts — across the criteria most important to consumers looking for a full-service regional bank. Given Huntington's emphasis on relationship banking and its significant Midwest branch presence, we paid particular attention to how its products work together and whether the bank delivers consistent value across its account lineup.

  • Account variety and product breadth: We evaluated the range of banking products Huntington offers, including four distinct checking accounts, two savings accounts, both regular and jumbo CDs across a wide range of terms, and a money market account. Banks that allow customers to manage checking, savings, and long-term deposits under one roof with relationship-based benefits rate more favorably for consumers who prefer consolidated banking.
  • APY on deposit accounts: We assessed the interest rates available on savings accounts, CDs, and money market accounts, distinguishing between standard rates and the elevated relationship rates available to customers who maintain qualifying balances or linked checking accounts. For CDs, we evaluated both the breadth of available terms and the competitiveness of both standard and promotional rates.
  • Monthly fees and waiver requirements: We reviewed the monthly maintenance fees across all accounts, including the conditions under which each fee can be waived — such as minimum average daily balance thresholds or maintaining a linked Huntington checking account. Accounts with straightforward, achievable waiver conditions rate more favorably than those with steep or complex requirements.
  • Overdraft protection: We evaluated Huntington's approach to overdraft protection, including its $50 overdraft threshold with no fee and its grace period for overdrafts exceeding that amount. We compared this policy against peer institutions and weighted it favorably, as consumer-friendly overdraft policies have a meaningful impact on the day-to-day banking experience for customers who occasionally spend beyond their balance.
  • Branch and ATM access: We considered the size of Huntington's branch and ATM network. We noted that its availability is geographically limited, which is a meaningful constraint for consumers outside the Midwest, and that its ATM network is significantly smaller than national banks and many online banks with surcharge-free ATM partnerships.
  • Mobile app and customer service: We evaluated Huntington's mobile app ratings across major platforms, its digital banking features, and the availability of customer support channels. We noted the contrast between high app ratings and lower third-party customer satisfaction scores, which reflects a gap between digital tool quality and broader service experience.

Is Huntington Bank good for you?

Huntington Bank could be a solid option for anyone who values keeping their bank accounts close to home with easy access to branches and in-network ATMs, provided they live in one of the 14 states where Huntington maintains branch locations (Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin).

The bank offers a wide variety of products and account types that should appeal to someone looking to consolidate all of their banking needs under one roof with Huntington's relationship-focused service.

When Huntington Bank might not be good for you

If you're a resident of a state outside Huntington's current branch footprint, you won't be able to open an account there since it is a regional bank, not a national one.

Beyond that, savers looking for consistently competitive rates on CDs, savings accounts, and money market accounts might find a better match with a top online bank such as Quontic Bank.

Huntington Bank Perks Checking Account

The bank's Perks Checking is an interest-bearing account with no minimum required to open one. It comes with a $10 monthly service fee unless you make an eligible deposit of $1,000 each month or keep at least $5,000 across your Huntington accounts.

The first five non-Huntington ATM withdrawal fees assessed by Huntington will be waived during each statement period. (Big banks such as Chase and Wells Fargo tend to limit non-network ATM fee reimbursements to their premium accounts.) Other perks include credit score monitoring at no added cost and early direct deposit.

Huntington Bank Asterisk-Free Checking Account

Asterisk-Free Checking is a basic checking account with no monthly maintenance fees, no minimum balance requirements, and can be opened online. The account does not earn interest, unlike Huntington's other three checking accounts, but savers still get access to early direct deposit and the bank's consumer-friendly overdraft protection.

This account is comparable to Fifth Third Bank's Momentum Checking account, offering many of the same features and available without monthly fees. Check out FinanceBuzz's picks for the best checking accounts.

Huntington Bank Platinum Perks Checking Account

The Platinum Perks Checking account is a premium version of the Perks checking account with upgraded features, such as unlimited fee waivers at non-Huntington ATMs and reimbursements for withdrawal fees charged by another ATM owner. Savers get a slightly higher interest rate with the Platinum account, and it also offers round-the-clock identity monitoring at no added cost.

Huntington Bank SmartInvest Checking Account

SmartInvest Checking comes with several requirements. You'll need to maintain at least $100,000 in Total Relationship balances and have an active Managed Investment account. The perks for this account are notable: There are no monthly maintenance fees, no overdraft fees, and you won't have to worry about wire or internal transfer fees. It's also the highest interest checking account with two tiers that reward savers with big balances at the bank.

Other checking accounts we recommend

Chase Bank's Total Checking is a basic account that's compatible with Zelle and offers excellent in-person access through a network of more than 5,000 branches. SoFi's Checking and Savings Account has no monthly maintenance fees or overdraft fees5 and acts as a two-in-one checking and savings account combo. SoFi® is member FDIC.3

Huntington Bank Relationship Savings Account

Huntington's Relationship Savings Account offers a wide range of rate options depending on several criteria. If you bring new money that is not currently on deposit in any Huntington account, then you can likely qualify for the account's highest promotional yields, depending on which other Huntington accounts you have. However, it's important to note that you'll also need to maintain an average daily balance of at least $5,000 to qualify for this top rate. Anything less and your APY will be in line with the much lower standard rates.

On top of that, there are higher relationship rates available for account holders who also have a qualifying Huntington checking account. It sure seems like a lot, especially if you're comparing it to the best savings accounts where you could get a high yield across all balances without needing a linked checking account to maximize earnings.

There's also a $10 monthly fee, which can be waived if you maintain a $2,500 average daily balance or have an eligible personal Huntington checking account. Considering how important it is for maximizing your interest rate on this account, you'd probably already be meeting both those criteria each month. If you're not, then it might be time to switch accounts.

Huntington Bank Premier Savings Account

The bank's Premier Savings Account offers a paltry 0.01% (as of 3/31/26) APY (rates may vary by zip code). You can open an account online or at a branch with just $50 as long as you reside in one of the 14 states where Huntington Bank operates. To avoid having to pay a $4 monthly maintenance fee, you will need to maintain a $300 average daily balance or have an eligible Huntington personal checking account.

Other savings accounts we recommend

The American Express High Yield Savings Account offers a competitive APY and doesn't have a monthly fee or minimum deposit requirement6. Synchrony also stands out as an online bank with higher-than-average APYs and no monthly fees. Most savings accounts don't include an ATM card, but with Synchrony's High Yield Savings account, you can get one with access to 55,000+ surcharge-free ATMs nationwide.

You can open both regular and jumbo fixed-rate CDs with Huntington Bank. To open a regular CD, you'll need at least $1,000, while jumbo CDs require at least $100,000. Huntington does not currently allow CDs to be opened online; it requires a visit to a branch to get going.

The bank's CDs come with standard and promotional rates (may vary based on your location) across a wide variety of term lengths. Standard CDs range between one month and 72 months. Jumbo CDs range between seven days and 1,825 days. Promotional CD terms with the highest rates are limited to just a few options. All the other terms receive the standard yields, which are well below average.
