If you're like most retirees, Social Security benefits are a significant part of your retirement budget. You count on these benefits arriving at the same time every month so you can pay the bills, and for the most part, the schedule stays the same. But certain recipients experience schedule changes some months, and May 2026 is one of those months.

Keep reading to learn why some Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security recipients are getting their benefits on an atypical date this month. We also explain what to do if your payment doesn't arrive as expected.

Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more.

A home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short.

Social Security and SSI payment dates vary some months

The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers Social Security benefits for retired workers and SSI benefits for disabled, elderly, and/or impoverished individuals with limited resources. While the SSA typically pays you on a strict schedule, it's closed for weekends and federal holidays. If your payment date falls on one of those dates, the SSA will pay you on the earliest possible weekday instead.

SSI payments for May will be different for some

Usually, SSI benefits are paid on the first day of the month. SSI beneficiaries who also receive Social Security payments get the latter payment on the third day of the month, as do Social Security recipients who started taking their benefits prior to May 1997.

However, May 3, 2026, is a Sunday. This means Social Security benefits for these individuals will be paid out early on Friday, May 1, along with typical SSI payments for SSI recipients.

When the rest of May's payments arrive

Unless you fall under one of the two beneficiaries described above, your Social Security payment date remains the same. The SSA will pay you on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month:

  • Those born between the first and 10th day of their birth month will be paid on Wednesday, May 13.
  • Those born between the 11th and 20th day of their birth month will be paid on Wednesday, May 20.
  • Those born between the 21st and 31st day of their birth month will be paid on Wednesday, May 27.

What to do if your payment doesn't arrive

Didn't receive your Social Security check when you expected? Take these steps to resolve the issue.

Check the holiday/weekend schedule

Start by checking the SSA's benefits payment schedule to see if there's a federal holiday you're unaware of. You might simply have gotten the date wrong, especially if a weekend disrupted the typical calendar schedule.

Check with your bank

Next, call your bank's customer service line to find out if they're still processing a payment from the SSA. It's possible your bank closed for a state holiday that didn't impact the federal government.

Make sure your direct deposit information is updated

Log on to your my Social Security account to make sure your routing and account numbers are accurate, especially if you've recently changed banks or opened a new account.

Verify all other information is correct in your online Social Security account

Check that your birthday, address, and contact information are all up to date online. Otherwise, the SSA could ping you for suspected fraud, which will delay your benefit.

Contact the SSA

If three mailing days have passed since the day you were supposed to receive your benefit, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. your time. (The office will be closed on weekends and holidays.) Phone wait times could be longer than usual, but the SSA website notes that wait times are typically shorter in the morning.

How much is the average monthly Social Security payment?

According to the most recent government data (February 2026), the average retired worker receives a $2,076.41 benefit amount.

How to maximize your Social Security benefits

Want to ensure your benefits last the entire month? A few small changes to your typical spending schedule can make a big difference:

  • If possible, try to plan all your errands for the day or week for the same car trip so you don't have to use more gas than necessary.
  • Consider public transit options if prices at the pump get too high.
  • Swap a vacation for a staycation, especially if transportation costs stay high.
  • Think about picking up a part-time job. Tutoring from home, selling crafts, or offering consulting services in your free time can round out your monthly budget.
  • Make sure your car insurance policy offers the right coverage and price for your age and driving habits.

Bottom line

Senior benefits are an essential part of your stress-free retirement. If you're experiencing recurring problems getting your benefit on time, it could be worth scheduling an in-person appointment with an SSA representative at your nearest local office. Personalized, one-on-one help can ensure you get to the bottom of the issue so you experience minimal disruptions for the rest of the year.
