Why some Social Security offices have closed

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), a limited number of offices are temporarily closed. Some offices are still operational, but are closed to public visits. Those offices are only offering phone support or scheduled appointments during their temporary closures. The SSA states that the by-appointment-only service may be due to construction, the fact that the office can't allow people to wait outside of the building, or other reasons.

The SSA told USA Today that the closures are not permanent and are due to issues like planned renovations, maintenance, or issues with the facilities that the SSA is working to resolve.

The areas affected by the closures

The closures and limited services impact select offices across several locations, including Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, the Northern Mariana Islands, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. These are patchwork closures, not sweeping closures of the majority of offices in the states.

The closures and restrictions only apply to certain offices, so if you're planning to visit an office, it's best to check the ssa.gov listing of office closings and emergencies to confirm whether your local office is impacted. The list of closures is searchable by state.

When should the offices open again

The SSA stresses that the closures and restrictions are temporary. Some of the closures listed on the website are scheduled to last anywhere from a day to a few weeks. Other offices, like the Logan, West Virginia office, are listed as not being able to provide in-person service until further notice. You may use the ssa.gov website to access any information available about your local office and the anticipated timeline for any service disruptions.

How to get online Social Security help

According to the SSA, the Social Security website is the best way to get help. Through the my Social Security portal, you may also access many services, including reviewing your earnings history and benefit estimates, updating your direct deposit or address information, and printing benefit verification letters and tax forms.

You may also use the portal to apply for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits.

How to get Social Security phone support

If you can't use the Social Security portal, you might consider phone support. Many of the affected offices are providing support by phone and may be able to save you a trip to an office, so you may try calling your local office.

If you can't reach your local office, you may call the SSA's helpline at 1-800-772-1213. The line is available between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. According to the SSA, wait times are usually shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month, so you might want to strategically time your call.

The SSA's automated telephone services are also available 24 hours a day.

Services available through phone support

With phone support, you may be able to request a benefit verification letter and ask for a Social Security Benefit statement to request a replacement tax summary. If you've applied for benefits, you may ask to receive a claim status. You may also use the phone support to find the address of your local Social Security office and request an Application for a Social Security Card.

If you're a Medicare beneficiary, you may use the phone system to request a replacement Medicare Card or request a form SSA-1020 for help with prescription drug costs.

Bottom line

The Social Security office closures and restrictions are limited, and many offices are still open. The SSA indicates that these aren't anticipated to be permanent closures, though some offices are closed indefinitely. If you need to travel to your local office, checking the ssa.gov website first might help save you the trip. The site features the ability to sort results by the first letter of your state, making it quick and easy to check on your local office's availability.

Remember that all Social Security offices are closed on federal holidays like Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day.

If your retirement plan includes Social Security benefits, consider familiarizing yourself with all the ways you could get help if you need it, so if issues do arise, you'll be prepared with multiple options.
