Millions of workers have paid into Social Security their entire working lives. But when retirement rolls around, you may have questions about benefits as you try to stretch your retirement dollars further.

One way to get answers is to visit a local Social Security office.

However, the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has identified approximately 800 federal real estate leases it wants to cancel, and 47 of those leases are attached to Social Security offices, according to reporting by the Associated Press (AP).

The AP says the following Social Security offices will be closing.

According to Kentucky U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers — a Republican — the Hazard location is an empty office that was once used for hearings.

Another location in Campbellsville is alleged to be closing, but Mayor Dennis Benningfield has not yet received any information about such a closure.

Louisiana

  • 2805 Charles Blvd., Greenville (June 24)
  • 1865 W. City Drive, Elizabeth City (June 24)

Western North Carolina residents are concerned about the closure of the Franklin office, because it's the only SSA location west of Asheville. Closing it would leave residents with a two-and-one-half hour drive to the next closest location.

U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, a Republican representing Greenville, released a statement saying "the closures will only impact small hearing rooms within another SSA office, and not the public facing field offices."

The federal workers union for the area says the Elizabeth City and Greenville office closures were rescinded, so it is unclear which locations will actually be impacted.

North Dakota

A statement from the office of U.S. Sen. John Hoeven, a Republican, says the Minot SSA office will remain open.

Hoeven says it's only the remote hearing office lease that is under review, and that a final decision has not yet been made.

  • 75 S. Broadway, White Plains (May 31)
  • 332 Main St., Poughkeepsie (July 31)

New York U.S. Rep Mike Lawler, a Republican, has expressed his displeasure with the closure of the White Plains office.

"The decision to close the only Social Security Hearing Office in the Hudson Valley is a slap in the face to thousands of my constituents who rely on these services," Lawler wrote in a social media post.

Lawler says the White Plains office handles more than 2,000 SSA cases and conducts hundreds of in-person hearings annually.

The future of the Poughkeepsie location is still unclear. Despite being on the DOGE list of closures, U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan says the location is not slated to close.

Ohio

West Virginia

Wyoming

Rep. Harriet Hageman and Sen. John Barrasso — both Republicans — say that only the ancillary hearing room will be shut down.

What can you do at Social Security offices?

Tada Images/Adobe social security administration (ssa) sign

In recent years, many of SSA services have been transitioned to phone or online options. However, there are still some things that you can do in person.

For example, when you visit a brick-and-mortar Social Security office, you can get help with paperwork, or provide original documents to the SSA. You can also talk to a representative about other concerns you might have.

Bottom line

bnenin/Adobe talking with someone on phone

If you are in the process of preparing for retirement, there is a good chance that questions about Social Security will be part of your planning. If you have a local Social Security office nearby, you can pop in to get answers to your questions.

However, even if you don't live close to an office, remember that you can still contact the SSA by phone, email, or regular mail.
