Car theft remains a persistent (and costly) problem across America, with over 850,000 cars stolen in 2024 according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Don't think it can happen to you? That equates to a car stolen every 37 seconds in the U.S.
For drivers, understanding which models are more frequently targeted (and easier to steal) could be the difference between an affordable insurance premium and a sky-high rate, let alone the inconvenience, cost, and personal violation of a car theft. That's why our team at FinanceBuzz compiled car theft data from all 50 states to analyze the most commonly stolen cars in America and which models are most frequently stolen in each state.
The Most Stolen Cars in America
For those familiar with TikTok trends, it's no surprise that Hyundai vehicles are among the most stolen in America. Outside of the Elantra, truck models like the Chevrolet Silverado (most stolen in 9 states) and Ford F150 (most stolen in 6 states) were among the most stolen models.

The 10 most stolen car models in the U.S.
With over 58,000 thefts between the Elantra and Sonata in 2024 alone, Hyundai's two most popular models are the two most stolen car models in America. While their position at the top can't be solely attributable to social media, it may be one cause.
In 2023, after TikTok videos showing an exploit that allowed individuals to start engines with just a screwdriver and USB cable, states began urging recalls for Kia and Hyundai models after an increase in thefts. Similarly, the Kia Optima and Kia Soul also landed among the top 10.
Car | Total Stolen |
Hyundai Elantra | 31,712 |
Hyundai Sonata | 26,720 |
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | 21,666 |

What happens to your insurance when your car gets stolen?
Whether you drive one of the most stolen cars or not, vehicle theft is costly, both in terms of time and money. For those with the best car insurance, however, the pain can be minimized through adequate full coverage car insurance plans.
Stolen vehicles are typically covered under your insurance provider's comprehensive coverage. If someone steals your car and it's not recovered, your insurance provider will typically investigate and send you a check for the car's value, which depends on the model, year, and condition of your vehicle.
If your car is recovered but damaged, you may also have to file claims with your insurance company to fix any issues caused by the theft. Luckily for car owners, there are plenty of easy ways to get car insurance quotes online, which can save you money on car insurance.
