Liberty Mutual underwrites about 3% of all cars on the road, and GEICO underwrites another 12%, putting these two companies in solid competition with each other among the top 10 insurance companies. Both offer roughly similar levels of service and coverage options, but GEICO pulls just a bit ahead in these departments. GEICO gains even more of an advantage when you consider its rates — it's generally much, much cheaper than Liberty Mutual.
GEICO isn't right for everyone, though, and we still recommend checking your rates with as many companies as you can before you make a decision. We'll cover some of the differences between Liberty Mutual and GEICO here, but it's ultimately up to you to verify which company is cheaper for your unique situation.

Neither Liberty Mutual nor GEICO are particularly known as companies that will move heaven and earth to ensure you're a happy customer. (You'd need to pay a lot more for that, after all.) But, GEICO does have a slight leg up over Liberty Mutual when it comes to getting quality service.
GEICO has a stronger financial footing than Liberty Mutual, as shown by its higher AM Best rating. If a mega-disaster hits causing lots of people to file a claim at once, it's less likely that GEICO will go under compared to Liberty Mutual.
GEICO also gets better ratings for customer service. It scored consistently higher than Liberty Mutual in all regions of the country where J.D. Power surveyed customers in 2024, even if both companies were generally rated as below par. GEICO also has fewer complaints than you'd expect for a company of its size lodged with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (1 is the default, so 0.75 shows a lower-than-expected amount of complaints).

Which company is cheaper?
In general, GEICO tends to be the cheaper option, at least according to information from the Insurify rate-comparison site. Liberty Mutual tended to charge over three times as much for the same minimum-coverage policies — a huge difference when it comes to saving money on car insurance.
That said, it's worth reiterating: averages aren't individuals, and car insurance companies vary widely in how they price your policy. It's totally possible that you might get cheaper rates with Liberty Mutual. In fact, you won't know until you get a quote.
We can, however, look at how prices for Liberty Mutual and GEICO compare for minimum-coverage policies in specific situations.

Clean driving record
If you're a relatively safe driver, GEICO is clearly the cheaper option, at least looking at the average rates it charges. Still, it's worth checking your rates with both companies since policy prices could vary by other factors, too, like where you live and how much you drive.
Average rate:
Speeding ticket on driving record
In some states, like Iowa and Ohio, as many as 15% of drivers have speeding tickets on their records. GEICO may be a better choice in this case.
At-fault accident on driving record
Filing any type of claim — whether it was your fault or not — can trigger a rate increase with insurance companies. But if you're the one who caused an accident, you can expect your rates to rise even higher, especially with Liberty Mutual.
DUI on driving record
If you have a DUI, your state will usually require your insurance company to file an SR-22 or FR-44 form in order to get your license back. Not all insurers will do this, but both Liberty Mutual and GEICO can help.
Teen driver
Teen drivers can be notoriously expensive to insure, but luckily both Liberty Mutual and GEICO offer multiple discounts to help with this.
Senior driver
Senior drivers benefit from lots of experience and tend to drive less overall, so they often pay lower rates.
Discounts
Liberty Mutual offers 16 different discount options, a similar number to GEICO with 15 discounts available. GEICO offers a "membership and employee discount" with over 500 partners on the list, expanding the potential savings to many more people.

RightTrack vs. DriveEasy
Both Liberty Mutual and GEICO offer a telematics program, also known as "usage-based insurance," that tracks your driving and applies a policy discount based on your driving habits, like how hard you brake and how much you drive. It can be one of the easiest ways to lower car insurance rates, and they seem to work fairly well, too, ranking #2 and #3 for customer satisfaction among usage-based insurance apps in J.D. Power's 2024 survey.
There are a few differences between the programs, though. They're not available in every state; RightTrack is only offered in 33 states and Washington, D.C. while DriveEasy is only available in 38 and D.C. DriveEasy only offers a discount ranging from 5% to 15% while RightTrack's ranges from 15% to 30%.
Coverage
GEICO and Liberty Mutual both offer the same basic car insurance coverage options with a few extras thrown in.
- Bodily injury liability
- Property damage liability
- Medical payments coverage
- Personal injury protection
- Collision
- Comprehensive
- Uninsured motorist
- Underinsured motorist
- Roadside assistance
- Rental reimbursement
- Mexico coverage
There are some differences between Liberty Mutual and GEICO, though. GEICO offers rideshare coverage and mechanical breakdown insurance while Liberty Mutual does not. But Liberty Mutual makes up for it by offering several more types of coverages you won't find at GEICO, including:
- Gap coverage
- OEM parts
- Teacher's car
- New car replacement
- Better car replacement
- Deductible Fund
FAQs
How do I contact Liberty Mutual?
Liberty Mutual provides a lot of DIY options in your online account or through the mobile app, including filing a claim. But if you need to contact a human, you can do so by calling 1-800-290-8711 or texting 501-439-4998.
How do I contact GEICO?
GEICO offers more avenues to reach a human than Liberty Mutual, including a live chat option on its website. You can also call up its customer support team at 1-800-207-7847.
Is Geico owned by Liberty Mutual?
No. GEICO is famously owned by Warren Buffett's investment firm Berkshire Hathaway. Conversely, Liberty Mutual isn't owned by another firm — it's its own company.
Who is GEICO's biggest competitor?
GEICO ranks as the third-largest insurer of private passenger cars in the United States (as opposed to commercial car insurance, for example). Only two other companies — Progressive and State Farm — were bigger.
Bottom line
If I were shopping for a new policy, I'd put my money on GEICO as the best car insurance option — but I wouldn't stop there. Companies use so many different factors when setting your premiums that it's impossible to say GEICO will always be cheaper, in every case, for everyone. That's why you should always check your rate options with other companies too. Who knows? Maybe Liberty Mutual can beat out GEICO in your own individual case.
