Hyatt recently announced plans to open its first Hyatt-branded hotel in Iceland — Hyatt Centric Reykjavík. Scheduled for a 2022 opening, Hyatt Centric Reykjavík will be a 169-room boutique property situated on Laugavegur, the main street of Iceland’s capital and largest city, Reykjavík.

Part of Hyatt’s lifestyle portfolio, Hyatt Centric Reykjavík will feature everything travelers have come to love in the Hyatt Centric brand, including a location situated just a 10-minute walk to the city center, modern accommodations, chic bars and restaurants, meeting spaces, and a modern fitness studio. Among the three food and beverage outlets on the property will be a pop-up rooftop bar overlooking the capital city (#selfieworthy).

Hyatt Centric Reykjavík is the latest addition to the growing Hyatt Centric portfolio in Europe and around the world. Today, Hyatt Centric has 33 open hotels in 32 cities.

“Over the past year we have spent a great deal of time understanding the Nordic market and getting to know the hotel developers and owners in Iceland. Hyatt Centric Reykjavík will mark the first Hyatt hotel in Iceland, an important milestone for us,” said Peter Norman, senior vice president of acquisitions and development at Hyatt.

And if you haven't yet been to Iceland, this hotel could be a major milestone for you as well.

What you absolutely must see in Iceland (and London too)

Dubbed “The Land of Fire and Ice,” Iceland has no shortage of geological diversity. With its mystical landscapes, Northern Lights, and geothermal spas, there are good reasons Iceland continues to be a favorite among travelers. In fact, between 2013 and 2018, the island saw an average increase in tourism of 24.8%, according to the Icelandic Tourist Board.

Hyatt Centric Reykjavík can be an ideal base for any traveler wanting to explore the breathtaking natural beauty of the island. Depending on how far you want to travel from the capital city, there are numerous Instagrammable destinations you’ve got to check out — whether it’s hiking through the rich flora and black sand deserts of Skaftafell nature reserve in Vatnajökull National Park, whale watching in Husavik, or relaxing and enjoying the natural treatments at the Blue Lagoon, the county’s most visited geothermal spa.

And, before you leave, check out the remains of a United States Navy plane that crashed onto the desolate Sólheimasandur black sand beach in South Iceland in 1973. Although the path leading to the famous wreckage is closed for vehicles, you can make the trek on foot.

If Iceland isn’t for you (or you’ve already been there), Hyatt is also opening hotels in a number of other fun, new European locations, including the 152-room Great Scotland Yard hotel which is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt. Converted from the former headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, this luxury hotel is the first by The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand in the UK and opens the doors to the public to one of London’s most historic and cherished buildings for the first time in almost 200 years.

How to get enough points to go to Iceland

If you frequently turn to Hyatt during your travels and are looking for cool new destinations, you may want to consider joining Hyatt’s rewards program, World of Hyatt. It’s already a great program and the opportunities it offers avid travelers continue to expand as Hyatt furthers its brand footprint across the globe.

If you’re looking to rack up Hyatt rewards, then The World of Hyatt Credit Card might be the best hotel credit card choice to jumpstart your savings toward an Icelandic stay. Not only does the card come with a slew of travel benefits, but as a new cardholder, you can earn up to 60,000 Bonus Points: earn 30,000 Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening, plus up to 30,000 more Bonus Points by earning 2 Bonus Points total per $1 spent in the first 6 months from account opening on purchases that normally earn 1 Bonus Point, on up to $15,000 spent. Then, you’ll earn up to 9X points per $1 spent at Hyatt hotels (4 bonus points per $1 on qualified purchases at Hyatt hotels plus up to 5 base points per $1 from Hyatt as a World of Hyatt member), 2X points per $1 spent on restaurants, airline tickets purchased directly from the airlines, local transit and commuting and on fitness club and gym memberships, and 1X points per $1 spent on 1X.

With those earnings, you'll have no trouble being ready to book a stay at the new Icelandic Hyatt in 2022!

If you're also looking to earn enough points for Scotland Yard, or just you want to accrue World of Hyatt points even faster, then we recommend you also hold a Chase credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, for instance, is one of the best travel credit cards for this purpose. It allows you to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to a variety of travel partners, including Hyatt. You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt at a rate of 1:1, so your points won’t lose any value in the transfer process.

Whatever travel rewards credit cards you choose, we will sjáumst á Íslandi! (That’s Icelandic for “see you in Iceland!”)
