Median monthly rent: $1,854

Pristine, quartz sand beaches with turquoise Gulf waters (and free parking) are the main draw to Sarasota, home of the often hyped Siesta Key. But the city also lures residents with its arts scene, architecture, upscale dining and shopping, and golfing.

It's not all luxury highrises, however, as state parks and preserves offer an affordable way to enjoy outdoor recreation options like paddling, wildlife viewing, and birdwatching.
