Why is Big Lots having issues?

Big Lots has been struggling in recent years due to economic issues like inflation, which can be a particularly tough problem for consumers when buying big-ticket items like furniture and home goods.

High interest rates have also hit the discount retailer, making it harder for it to find financial success.

The company’s economic battles came to a head in September when it filed for bankruptcy and set out plans for more store closures.

Nexus Capital Management LP plans to buy the company for $700 million as part of its bankruptcy filing to help it overcome its financial troubles.

Big Lots originally announced in July that it planned to close around 40 stores as part of its plan to address its financial problems.

However, that number has skyrocketed to more than 400 store closures since its bankruptcy filing and purchase by Nexus Capital Management, with locations across multiple states affected by the shutdowns.

Here are a few of those locations that will be shutting down, and if you live in one of them, it could affect your shopping.

The Big Lots closures in these states are only part of the 400 stores the retailer plans to shut down in the coming months.

Stores in locations like California, Florida, New York, and New Jersey will also be affected as Big Lots continues the process of downsizing locations as part of its bankruptcy filing.

Big Lots could also close down distribution centers

The announcement that Big Lots would be brought by Nexus Capital Management also included a note about the company’s plans to optimize different aspects of its organization.

That analysis could also include changes to distribution centers, which could affect potential online orders or what types of products you can find in your local Big Lots if it remains open.

Which other retailers have struggled recently?

Many retailers have struggled in recent months due to inflation and a lack of consumer spending, which has hit companies’ bottom lines.

Walgreens and Rite Aid have shuttered pharmacies in multiple states, while clothing retailers Express and rue21 shut down stores this year, with rue21 shuttering all its locations as part of a bankruptcy filing.
