The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® are two of the most popular credit cards for travel for several reasons. First, both cards offer elevated earnings on travel purchases and come with travel-related statement credits. But premium credit cards also come with high annual fees, and these two cards have some of the highest out of any card on the market. As such, you can expect a suite of benefits perfect for any frequent flyer.
Cardholders of both cards get airport lounge access as a primary perk. The caveat — access differs between the two cards. Both cards allow you to access the Priority Pass network, which includes 1,500+ lounges worldwide. However, if you’re after ultimate lounge access, the Amex Platinum is the better choice. The only lounge exclusive to the Sapphire Reserve is the new Sapphire Lounge, with only four locations currently open.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the Amex Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve to determine which offers more comprehensive access to pre-flight meals and comfort.

Shared lounge networks
Premium travel cards often have a bit of overlap in their benefits, and lounge access isn’t an exception. Cardholders of the Amex Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve can both activate a Priority Pass Select membership, specifically designed for U.S. credit cards. With it, you can access more than 1,500 lounges worldwide.
Priority Pass
Free food, drinks, and Wi-Fi are commonplace among Priority Pass lounges but could vary from light snacks to full self-serve buffets. Additionally, one lounge might have free massage chairs, while another could have a spa room.
I’ve been to Priority Pass lounges all over the world — some are fantastic, while others in smaller airports leave a bit to be desired. Either way, it’s better than waiting at your gate in an uncomfortable chair and with no Wi-Fi.
Priority Pass offers other amenities, like credits for restaurants and sleeping rooms at select airports, but these perks have been phased out of the memberships provided by most credit cards throughout the past few years. The Amex Platinum lost this benefit back in 2019, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve is the most recent to announce the change. Still, the size of this network makes it much easier for you to find a lounge in plenty of global destinations.
For example, 63 Plaza Premium Lounges have recently joined the Priority Pass network, making it easier than ever for cardholders to find somewhere to relax while traveling. I have access to Plaza Premium Lounges with my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, and in my experience, these lounges typically have an elevated menu and enhanced decor.
If you already know your travel itinerary or have an idea of certain airports you might be flying through, check the Priority Pass website or app to search lounges by airport and see what amenities are available.
Access policy: One-time activation is required for Priority Pass Select membership (and to receive your Priority Pass Select card). Present your valid Priority Pass Select card, government-issued I.D., and same-day boarding pass.
Guest policy: Up to two guests free of charge. Additional guest charges can vary by lounge location but generally cost $27 per guest per visit.
There are far too many Priority Pass Lounges to list, but here’s a breakdown of how many there are in different parts of the world:
- North America: 150+
- Latin America: 150+
- Europe: 370+
- Africa: 90+
- Middle East: 70+
- Asia/Pacific: 440+
It’s safe to say that you can likely find a lounge no matter where you’re traveling.
The Platinum Card exclusive lounges
Apart from Priority Pass lounges, Amex Platinum cardholders have access to the Amex Centurion Lounge, Delta SkyClubs, lounges in the Plaza Premium Group, Escape Lounges, and certain Lufthansa Lounges. Enrollment or activation may be required to access certain lounge benefits.
The Centurion Lounge
Amex Centurion Lounges are typically known for their high-quality dining options, high-speed Wi-Fi, and additional amenities — all included with your access to the lounge. Think of these lounges as luxury — food from award-winning chefs, drinks by mixologists, and a variety of spaces for any traveler.
Access policy: Unlimited complimentary access for Platinum cardmembers for departing flights only. Cardmembers must present their valid Amex Platinum card, a government-issued I.D., and a confirmed boarding pass for same-day travel. You can only access these lounges within three hours of your scheduled departure time, though this rule may not apply if you’re waiting for a connecting flight.
Guest policy: AMEX Platinum cardmembers in the U.S. are charged a per-visit fee of $50 for each guest or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age. You can earn complimentary access for up to two guests if you spend $75,000 or more in eligible purchases in a calendar year. Children below age 2 are free, with proof of age.

Cardmembers can also access other American Express lounges in different worldwide locations. The amenities at each location will vary, as will the guest access policies. For example, you can bring in one complimentary guest at the Stockholm lounge, but the Hong Kong lounge follows the same guest access policies as the U.S. Centurion Lounges. And in certain lounges, you might be able to bring in two complimentary guests.

Delta Sky Club
Delta Sky Clubs are available in 35+ U.S. airports and typically feature a variety of food and beverage options, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi. If you’re flying on Delta through a U.S. airport that doesn’t have a Centurion Lounge, a Delta Sky Club could be an excellent option to relax before your departure flight.
There are too many lounges to list, but expect to find them in most major cities, like Atlanta, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and more.
Access policy: Present your valid Amex Platinum card, government-issued I.D., and same-day Delta boarding pass for entry. Beginning on February 1, 2025, those with the Platinum Card will receive ten complimentary visits to Delta Sky Clubs each year. After, pay at a per-visit rate of $50 per person. For unlimited complimentary visits, spend $75,000 on your card in a calendar year.
Guest policy: Up to two guests of the cardmember may enter for a per-visit rate of $50 per person per location.
Plaza Premium
Cardholders of the Amex Platinum can visit lounges in the Plaza Premium network in nearly 100 airports worldwide. I’ve visited Plaza Premium lounges throughout South America and have been highly impressed with the quality.
For instance, the Plaza Premium Lounge at the São Paulo International Airport (GRU) is one of my favorite lounges I’ve ever visited. It has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway, fantastic dining options, a full coffee bar, and plenty of space for all travelers.
Access policy: Present your American Express Platinum Card and a valid boarding pass. Cardholders receive access for two to three hours, subject to availability.
Guest policy: Guests vary based on the location, but you can expect to bring one guest into the lounge free of charge.
Escape Lounges
Escape Lounges are located in the U.S. and U.K., but you can only access the U.S. lounges with your Amex Platinum card. However, the U.K. locations are typically included in the Priority Pass network, so you can use your complimentary Priority Pass Select (enrollment required) membership to access them.
These lounges provide complimentary food, beverages, and Wi-Fi access.
Access policy: Present your valid Amex Platinum card, government-issued I.D., and confirmed same-day boarding pass.
Guest policy: Up to two guests free of charge. Children under 2 are free.

Lounges in Portland and Tulsa are currently under development.
Lufthansa
Lufthansa lounges are part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection. Platinum Card members can access select Lufthansa Business Lounges regardless of ticket class and Lufthansa Senator Lounges when flying business class.
The Lufthansa Business lounges are typically larger, as they fit more guests, and have the standard amenities you’d expect — various food and drink options, Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating. Senator Lounges are a bit more elevated, with premium food and beverage options and upscale amenities like showers or spas in select locations.
You can find Lufthansa lounges in the U.S. and abroad. You should use the lounge finder feature in your American Express app for the most up-to-date information.
Access policy: To enter, show your valid Platinum Card or Centurion Card, government-issued photo ID, and confirmed seat on a same-day Lufthansa Group boarding pass.
Guest policy: Guests vary by lounge, but some locations allow guests free of charge.
Chase Sapphire Reserve exclusive lounges
With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you receive complimentary airport lounge access to Priority Pass lounges and Chase Sapphire Lounges. The Sapphire Reserve previously held the upper hand here because cardholders could access Priority Pass restaurants through their Priority Pass Select membership, while Platinum cardholders could not. Unfortunately, Chase dropped this benefit as of June 30, 2024, so these cards now have equal access to Priority Pass benefits.
Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Chase Sapphire Lounges are relatively new and provide Sapphire Reserve cardholders with a luxurious way to spend time before a flight. These lounges have been meticulously designed to incorporate local elements in both the dining options and decor.
Complimentary amenities vary by lounge, but you can generally expect to find things like seasonal menus, craft cocktails, and high-speed Wi-Fi. They also have spaces that can accommodate any traveler, including wellness areas, work spaces, and private rest pods.
Any card with a Priority Pass Select membership can access the Sapphire Lounge once yearly. Future visits are available at a discounted rate of $75. The Sapphire Reserve is the only card that offers unlimited access.
Although not complimentary, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can book a Reserve Suite at the New York (LGA) location at least 72 hours before departure, which includes the following amenities:
- A dedicated host
- Signature caviar service on arrival
- Exclusive menu from Jeffrey's Grocery
- Special selection of wine from Parcelle
- In-suite entertainment, including TV and speaker
- Private bathroom with spa shower
It’s unclear exactly how much this will cost, but it is likely one of the most unique airport experiences you can have.
Access policy: To enter, show your activated, complimentary Priority Pass membership and a valid boarding pass up to three hours before your departing flight.
Guest policy: You can bring up to two guests with you at no additional charge.
Locations:
Currently, there are four Sapphire Lounges:
- Boston (BOS)
- Hong Kong (HKG)
- New York City (LGA)
- New York City (JFK)
There are four more currently under construction:
- Las Vegas (LAS)
- Philadelphia (PHL)
- Phoenix (PHX)
- San Diego (SAN)
In addition, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can access the Sapphire Terrace at the Austin (AUS) airport, a scaled-back version of the lounges. It offers complimentary grab-and-go dining options, drinks, and indoor/outdoor seating.
You can also access the Etihad Lounge at the Washington-Dulles (IAD) airport with an activated Priority Pass membership. Note that Priority Pass members from other cards, like the Venture X, cannot access this lounge.
FAQ
Does it make sense to have both the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve?
It makes sense to have both the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve if you can take advantage of the perks and benefits of these rewards credit cards. The majority of these benefits are for travel, like the $300 annual travel credit on the Sapphire Reserve and the automatic elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy on the Amex Platinum.
If you’re a frequent traveler and can get your money’s worth from their benefits and rewards, it makes sense. But if you don’t travel often enough to leverage the benefits, the high annual fees aren’t likely worth it to have both cards.
What credit cards give you access to Delta Sky Club?
Both the Platinum Card from American Express and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, as well as their business card equivalents, offer complimentary Delta Sky Club access (through 1/31/25).
Beginning on February 1, 2025, those with the Platinum Card will receive ten complimentary visits to Delta Sky Clubs each year. After, pay at a per-visit rate of $50 per person. For unlimited complimentary visits, spend $75,000 on your card in a calendar year.
Similarly, beginning on February 1, 2025, SkyMiles Reserve cardholders will receive 15 complimentary visits per year. Afterward, the same per-visit rate and spending requirement apply.
Which Amex cards give you lounge access?
The Amex cards that give you lounge access are:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- The Centurion® Card from American Express
All information about The Centurion® Card from American Express has been collected independently by FinanceBuzz.
Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred have lounge access?
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card doesn’t offer lounge access. If you want a Chase credit card with complimentary airport lounge access, you’d be better off with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Bottom line
If you want the most lounge access possible, the Amex Platinum beats the Chase Sapphire Reserve. However, you likely aren’t deciding on a new credit card solely based on the number of lounges you can access. Look at your home airport to see which lounges are available and which ones you’ll take the most advantage of. If you don’t live near or transit through an airport with a Centurion Lounge, don’t let that be a determining factor when applying for the Platinum Card.
These premium credit cards have a ton of value and make a lot of sense for the right traveler. You might even want both in your wallet for different reasons. From lounge access to earning potential, always analyze your options before applying for a new card.
