People often buy used vehicles because they want to avoid the high prices of new models. Unfortunately, buying used doesn't always save you money in the long run.

If you get a car that ends up needing a lot of repairs, you might pay $10,000 or more for an engine replacement, up to $2,500 to replace an alternator, or more than $9,000 to replace the transmission. Even small repair costs can quickly add up.

We've put together the following list of reliable sedans so that you can focus on models that typically go the distance and lower your financial stress in the long run.

2022 Toyota Corolla

Reliability rating: 80/100

The 2022 Toyota Corolla is remarkably affordable for such a reliable vehicle. The price starts around $12,000 and goes up to about $26,000.

Edmunds notes that the 2022 Corolla has a considerably more impressive infotainment system than the previous year. The 2022 Corolla also comes with great safety features, including adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning system.

Most sources say owners can expect well-maintained Corollas to reach 200,000 miles at a minimum. Some even exceed 300,000 miles.

2022 Honda Accord

Reliability rating: 81/100

The 2022 Honda Accord is fairly reliable, earning an 81 out of 100 rating from J.D. Power, and it also costs a little more. You can expect to spend somewhere between $19,000 and $34,000.

What perks do you get for the higher price? Some features worth mentioning include a large cabin with luxurious materials, a powerful engine, and sporty handling that makes this sedan fun to drive.

Accord owners say their vehicles have lasted anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 miles, so it's reasonable to expect yours to cover about 250,000.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu

Reliability rating: 81/100

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is a good option if you want a very reliable sedan, but you have a tight budget. It's possible to buy a 2022 Malibu between $13,000 and $26,000.

That's all good news as long as you don't care much about a sleek aesthetic or the newest tech. While it does come with an easy-to-use touchscreen, it falls short of other sedans in these areas. The problem here is that Chevrolet hasn't made many significant changes to the Malibu's look and tech features since it released the ninth generation in 2016.

Take good care of your Malibu, and it could easily last you 150,000 miles.

2023 Honda Civic

Reliability rating: 82/100

The 2023 Honda Civic stands out for several reasons. The experts at Edmunds say it offers sharp handling that makes it fun to drive. It also features top-notch technology, like a touchscreen infotainment screen with intuitive menus and a camera-based system that helps you stay in your lane and avoid collisions.

Expect to spend $17,000 to $32,000 on a 2023 Civic. Spending more on a higher trim level means you'll get more advanced features and a peppier engine. Sure, it costs more than a Kia Forte, but the Civic retains its value fairly well, so you'll get some of your money back later when you decide to sell it to a new owner.

How many miles should you expect a Civic to cover? Somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000. Keep up with maintenance and minor repairs to improve the chance yours will get close to the 300,000 mark.

2022 Hyundai Sonata

Reliability rating: 82/100

J.D. Power gives the 2022 Hyundai Sonata the same reliability rating as the 2023 Civic. It costs quite a bit less, though. Expect to shell out somewhere between $16,000 and $27,000, depending on which trim level and options you choose. In fact, Edmunds notes that the Sonata is a particularly good value for the money.

Other perks of buying a 2022 Sonata include its ample trunk and interior storage space, intuitive controls, and a responsive 10.3-inch touchscreen with above-average resolution.

Most sources say the Sonata will give you 200,000 to 250,000 miles.

2024 Lexus ES

Reliability rating: 82/100

The 2024 Lexus ES is easily the most expensive sedan on this list, with prices usually falling between $42,000 and $52,000. While it's considerably more expensive, you get to enjoy impressive interior materials, a spacious cabin, and an aesthetic based on attention to detail. If you want a vehicle that's reliable and luxurious, it's hard to beat the Lexus ES.

Other perks include a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a spacious trunk (13.9 cubic feet), and a 302-horsepower V6 engine (available on the ES 350 trim level).

The 2024 ES is still quite new, so it's hard to know how long it will last on the road. When you look at older models, though, it's fair to expect about 250,000 miles from the 2024 version.

2021 Toyota Avalon

Reliability rating: 82/100

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Toyota Avalon is one of the most expensive options. The expected price range starts around $25,000 and goes up to almost $33,000. (At least it's more affordable than the Lexus ES.)

What do you get for your money? For starters, a ton of advanced safety features, such as a pre-collision system, lane departure with steering assist, and intelligent clearance sonar that applies the brakes before you collide with a vehicle or other object. The 2021 Avalon also has a big, roomy cabin and comfortable ride quality, making it great for road trips.

Expect the Avaon to offer 200,000 miles or more on the road.

2018 Ford Fusion

Reliability rating: 83/100

We've reached the most reliable sedan on this list. Ford knows how to make a reliable sedan at an extremely affordable price. It's possible to find 2018 Fusions selling between $11,000 and $20,000.

You might not expect much from such a low-priced vehicle, but the Fusion delivers in surprising ways. The reviewers at Edmunds praise its advanced safety equipment, high-quality materials, quiet cabin, and impressive handling.

With good care, you can expect the Fusion to travel somewhere between 200,000 and 250,000 miles.
