If you have a Chase credit card eligible for point transfers, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can easily transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to a United MileagePlus account.

Points transfer at a 1:1 ratio from Chase to United and can take up to seven business days to complete. But in my experience, transfers to United often take a few minutes or less.

Let’s explore how you can convert Chase points to United miles so you can make valuable United redemptions.

In this article

Key takeaways

  • Only three Chase credit cards — Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card — allow you to transfer your points to Chase transfer partners.
  • Transferring Chase points to travel partners is a one-way street. Once you transfer your points to United or another partner, you can’t transfer them back.
  • You can transfer Chase points in increments of 1,000. You need a minimum of 1,000 Chase points to do a points transfer.
  • You can only transfer Chase points to yourself or one authorized user on your account. That means you can only transfer Chase points to your own United account or the account of an authorized user on your Chase account.

How to transfer Chase points to United

1. Create a United MileagePlus account

You need a United MileagePlus account before transferring your Chase points to United. This is United’s loyalty program, where your Ultimate Rewards points will be converted to United miles.

Tip
Note that it’s best practice to have the same exact name on all your loyalty program accounts so you don’t run into any transfer issues. For example, if your Chase account has “Robert Smith,” your United account should be the same rather than a nickname or preferred name, such as “Rob Smith.”

Here’s how to create a United account:

  1. Navigate to United.com and select the “Sign In” option. Then, choose “Create a MileagePlus account.”
United.com sign in page with a red arrow pointing to the text "Create a MileagePlus account".

  2. Go through the account creation process by inputting your name, date of birth, email address, and other required information.
  3. At the end, you must provide a password and five security questions. When you’re ready, select “Agree and create account.”

2. Transfer your points from Chase to United through your online account

Now that you have a United MileagePlus account, it’s time to transfer points from Chase to United. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Log in to your Chase account using a web browser.
  2. Select your applicable Chase card account and navigate to the Chase Travel landing page by selecting “Redeem” next to your Ultimate Rewards points total.

  1. Click on the “Travel” dropdown menu at the top and select the “Transfer points to partners” option.

  1. Find and select United Airlines from the available options.
  2. Select “Transfer Points.”
  3. Enter your United MileagePlus membership number and select “Next.”

  1. Enter how many points you want to transfer in increments of 1,000.
  2. Review the transfer details to make sure everything is correct, then click “Submit.”

Tip
You typically only want to transfer exactly how many points you need at a time. This is because you can’t transfer your points back to Chase from United or any other transfer partner. So research United’s website first to know how many points you need for a specific redemption.

How to book award travel with United

Navigate to United.com and enter your itinerary details. Make sure you have “Book with miles” selected. I also like to select “Flexible dates,” so I can see many dates and options at once. Click on “Find flights” to start your search.

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll be prompted to log in to your United account at this point. However, you can close the login window and continue your search without logging in. You will eventually have to log in to book a United award flight.

Since I chose the “Flexible dates” option on a one-way flight, I have a full month of award pricing to look through. This gives me an easily-scannable view of the cheapest award flights available for my itinerary.

Selecting a date will give me a breakdown of the available flights that day, including partner flights. I can quickly browse the different options and choose my preferred flight and fare class.

Keep in mind that United has a flight award deals page on its website where you can browse featured award itineraries. If you have some flexibility with your travel dates and destinations, this could be a good way to find some great deals.

For example, you could fly one way from Chicago to Zurich for as little as 30,000 miles.

Tip
The United Excursionist Perk is a unique United benefit that gives you a free one-way award flight if you book an eligible multi-city itinerary. Your travel must begin and end in the same region, but the free award flight must be in a different region than where you started. So you could fly from the U.S. to Europe, get a free flight across Europe, and then fly back to the U.S.
