- $25,000 at 4.00% APY earns about $1,000 over one year, or roughly $83 a month.
- The same $25,000 at 0.01% APY earns about $3 over one year, or less than $1 a month.
- That's a gap of about $997 a year on cash that could still stay reachable.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
Your savings account might feel like a quiet corner of your financial life. Money goes in, a tiny bit of interest shows up, and the account mostly stays out of trouble.
But that calm balance could be doing more work for your bank than it's doing for you. Banks are businesses, and savings deposits can help create several ways to earn, from interest spread to fees to keeping your broader relationship in one familiar place.
Your bank isn't necessarily doing anything shady. Your statement has clues. Once you know where to look, you can decide which cash belongs in a high-yield savings account and which cash should stay exactly where you need it.
Your savings fund the spread
Banks commonly earn money through the spread between what they pay on deposits and what they earn from loans and other interest-earning assets. In plain English, your savings may cost the bank very little while helping fund assets that earn more.
A bank earning profit is normal. The useful question is whether your savings account gives you enough back for the role your deposits play. Your exact dollars don't need to be matched to a specific mortgage or business loan for the broader point to matter.
So the first way your bank benefits is simple. Your savings account stores cash, and it can also feed the bank's earning model. Your job is to check whether that tradeoff still works for you.
The rate gap is yours
The second route is the gap between the annual percentage yield, or APY, on your savings and what similar cash might earn elsewhere. High-yield savings accounts are still available around 4.00% APY (as of 10/06/26), which makes a low savings rate much easier to spot.
Say you have $25,000 in a savings account earning 0.01% APY for one year. That balance earns about $3. Move the same $25,000 to a high-yield savings account paying 4.00% APY for one year, and the same balance earns about $1,000.
| If you have | One year at 0.38% APY (national average) | One year at 3.80% APY (example) | You are leaving behind |
| $10,000 | $38 | $380 | $342 |
| $25,000 | $95 | $950 | $855 |
| $40,000 | $152 | $1,520 | $1,368 |
| $50,000 | $190 | $1,900 | $1,710 |
| $100,000 | $380 | $3,800 | $3,420 |
That $997 difference is the part that should get your attention. The bank could benefit when your funding stays cheap, but you're the one giving up the interest. Same money, different account behavior.
Small fees can beat interest
Fees are the third route, and they're easiest to miss when the dollar amount looks small. A $5 monthly maintenance charge comes to $60 over a year, which wipes out the $3 of interest from $25,000 at 0.01% APY many times over.
Pull up one recent statement and look for actual fee lines, not just the posted APY. Deposit account costs can include monthly maintenance charges, wire fees, transfer fees, and balance-related charges.
Here's the quick test: compare interest paid with fees paid over the same statement cycle. If your account paid $0.24 in interest and charged $5 in fees, the account paid poorly and cost you money to keep cash there.
Convenience keeps balances parked
Convenience has real value. Same-login transfers, linked checking, branch access, familiar customer service, and automatic transfers can make your current setup easy to live with.
But that ease gets expensive when it keeps a large balance parked at a low rate for no clear reason. If the annual gap on $25,000 is about $997, same-login transfers are carrying a price tag.
Maybe that price is worth it for next month's rent money or a bill cushion. For extra emergency savings or a vacation fund due next summer, the math could feel different.
One account anchors more business
A savings account can also help keep the rest of your financial routine anchored. Once your checking account, automatic transfers, bill pay, and savings are connected, changing one piece feels like work.
That stickiness has value to a bank even when your savings balance isn't huge. Future paychecks, tax refunds, transfers, and new account needs might keep flowing through the same financial orbit because the routine already exists.
You don't need to assume secret targeting or complicated tactics to see this route. Habits are powerful. If your savings account keeps your whole setup in place, the relationship itself could be valuable.
Your statement has the answer
A five-minute statement audit shows which of these routes apply to your account. Open one recent savings statement or your online account details, then collect these numbers:
- Current APY
- Interest earned for the statement cycle
- Fees charged for the statement cycle
- Average or ending balance
- Any minimum balance language
Then do one rough annual estimate using your savings account balance and the APY you're comparing. For a one-year simple interest estimate, the math is:
$25,000 × 0.04 = $1,000
That means $25,000 at 4.00% APY earns about $1,000 over one year. You can run the same estimate with your own balance by multiplying the balance by the APY as a decimal.
If your statement shows tiny interest, recurring fees, and a balance you don't need this week, you've found the decision point. The account could still be easy to use, but now you know what that ease costs.
Some cash should not move
Sorting your cash by timing makes the high-yield savings decision cleaner. Money you need before the end of the month should stay where you can reach it the same day, especially if it covers rent, utilities, groceries, or automatic payments.
Emergency savings could belong in a high-yield savings account if you could wait for an electronic transfer or keep a smaller same-day buffer in checking. Short-term goals, such as a car repair fund or holiday spending fund, might also fit if timing is flexible by a few days.
Some money belongs outside this move. Cash committed to a home closing in three weeks should stay in an account and transfer setup that won't create settlement drama. Money you won't need for five years or more may need an investing conversation instead.
So split the balance into piles. Bills and same-day cash stay close. Emergency funds and near-term goals could be candidates for high-yield savings. Long-term money deserves a different plan.
The hassles are real
The practical friction matters, and it's better to face it before you move a dollar. Electronic transfers between institutions often take one to three business days, though timing depends on the transfer type, cutoff time, and the institutions involved.
Emergency access is the big question. If you might need the money at 8 p.m. tonight, keep that cash somewhere you already know you can reach. If you keep a checking buffer, a high-yield savings account could still work for part of your emergency fund.
Deposit insurance is another check. FDIC insurance generally covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, and NCUA share insurance generally provides similar coverage for insured credit unions. Before moving money, confirm the account's insurance status and keep balances within the limits that apply to your ownership category.
Minimums also vary. Some accounts have minimum opening deposits, minimum balances to earn the stated APY, or balance tiers, so read those terms before assuming your whole balance earns the headline rate.
Bottom line
The payoff for checking one statement is knowing which dollars are barely working. If $25,000 earns 4.00% APY for one year, it earns about $1,000. If the same $25,000 earns 0.01% APY for one year, it earns about $3.
Keep bill money and same-day cash where you can reach it. But if the rest of your savings can wait a few days for a transfer, moving suitable cash to a high-yield savings account could be worth about $997 a year.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
