Tipping used to be a kind gesture for good service. You expected that you'd leave at least 15% in a restaurant. The manicurist doing your nails would get a tip. But you weren't being asked to add a tip at places like bodegas, hotels, and counter service sandwich spots. This new tipping culture isn't sitting well. Recent surveys report 81% of people say tipping is out of control and 42% indicate they would ban it.
Being asked to tip everywhere and anywhere is not only frustrating but it also impacts the way people live. You might want to go out to eat more but you're feeling the pinch when everywhere from the coffee shop to the smoothie spot wants a 20% tip or more. Food and drink that already feels expensive balloons quickly when you're adding a significant percentage onto the final total.
And Americans are over it. Here are 10 places they're reducing tips or refusing to tip in 2026.

Restaurants
Servers at restaurants in the United States count on tips as part of their overall pay. For years, a range of 15 to 20% was considered standard, but it's not unusual to see prompts for 22%, 24%, or even more today. And that's why 35% of Americans say they're going to start cutting their restaurant tips this year.
