Dining out is a treat we all look forward to, especially when going to restaurants that promise the consistency we count on. However, not every well-known chain lives up to its promises, sometimes making us less likely to go out to eat more.
From inconsistent food to less-than-stellar service, some of our one-time favorites can leave us disappointed. To that end, we've done some digging on the most overrated chain restaurants, helping you decide which spots may be worth skipping on your next night out.

The Cheesecake Factory
Is the cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory all that great? No, say folks who feel the chain focuses too much on quantity instead of quality.
That's in addition to a menu that's too large, but filled with dishes that disappoint. Plus, reading the nutrition information for almost anything may alarm health aficionados.
Panera
Panera has long branded itself as a healthy and sustainable alternative in the fast casual space, but many menu items aren't dietitian-approved. This frustrates diners, who note that McDonald's burgers have comparable nutrition information in some cases.
Plus, customers find the food to be mediocre, as well as overpriced, with a lack of menu consistency.
Texas Roadhouse
The removal of peanut buckets from the menu made a lot of loyal Texas Roadhouse patrons angry. Others lament the quality (or lack thereof) of their steaks.
Some argue that the overall quality has gone down in recent years, citing the disappointing bread rolls that used to be customer favorites.

Chipotle
You'll seldom see legitimate complaints about the quality of Chipotle, though consistency can be, well, inconsistent. Some folks rave about generous portion sizes, while others swear the chain is skimping out.
Often, though, there are so many authentic, delicious Mexican restaurants and food trucks throughout the country that have bolder flavors, fresher ingredients, and more sophisticated cooking techniques.
Starbucks
The lines at Starbucks belie the complaints that many have with it, starting with over-roasted coffee that tastes burnt (hence the nickname "Charbucks"). Coffee aficionados speculate that this is how the chain gets consistent flavor across its many locations.
Customers also take umbrage at the high price points and say that too much ice is added to cold drinks, tempering the flavor.
Chick-fil-A
Customer service aside, which is by many accounts exceptional, the long drive-thru lines at Chick-fil-A puzzle those who find more flavor at Popeyes.
In addition to bland breading and a lack of spice, some have pointed out that Chick-fil-A relies way too heavily on salt, which is unhealthy and arguably a bit lazy.
In-N-Out Burger
We know this one is controversial, but this famous West Coast burger joint is too basic for the adoration it receives. Critics call the patties "flat" and salty, the fixings bland and watery, and the sauce a pale imitation of other chains.
The fries aren't spared from the accusation of blandness, either, nor is the bare bones menu, which relies far too much on sauce for any excitement.
Applebee's
Although Applebee's has been in operation for over four decades, critics often say the food there is on par with premade frozen food you can pop in the microwave at home.
The menu also pairs disparate items with flavors that don't match and lacks options for anyone who's not an avid carnivore.
Wendy's
Fast food aficionados agree that Wendy's used to serve high-quality food, but there's been a decline that some trace back to the famous chicken sandwich wars.
Complaints range from a lack of seasoning to dull meat, sweet treats with a plastic-infused flavor, and inflated prices. Even the barbecue sauce was accused of being unrecognizable.

Five Guys
Five Guys may use fresh ingredients and quality oils, but that doesn't make up for the cost of the food, according to many who've expressed ire about their prices.
Other patrons have called the chain inconsistent from location to location, giving them pause as they might wind up with subpar fries and strange-tasting meat.
Jersey Mike's
Famous for freshly-sliced meats and sandwiches served Mike's Way, fans swear by the sandwich shop. But some find it to be overpriced.
Others complain about the lack of condiment options, bland bread, and homogeneous meats. More point out that you can get a more authentic sandwich at a mom-and-pop shop.
Panda Express
There are more than 2,600 Panda Express restaurants globally, but the chain's popularity isn't universal. Even the famous orange chicken has been disparaged as too sweet and lacking flavor simultaneously.
Critics point out that you can get better, less bland Chinese-American cuisine at local restaurants and even Chinese buffets.
Cracker Barrel
Ubiquitous in the south with restaurants in nearly every state, Cracker Barrel has gone downhill, according to diners. Some have compared the meatloaf to "dog food," which is quite the dig.
Some point fingers at the corporate management for the decline, accusing them of cutting corners, underpaying employees, and excessive greed. Others just plain dislike the atmosphere and food overall.
Papa John's
Papa John's takes in billions in revenue every year, but some folks are staunchly convinced it's wildly overrated.
It starts with what patrons have called basically non-existent customer service, as in they'll order pizza and nothing is ever delivered. It ends with people calling the food trash that's far too expensive.
Subway
According to former patrons of Subway on Reddit, "The quality nosedived years ago." They say the bread is lackluster and dry, while the meat portions are too small to be satisfying.
Some miss the formerly reasonable prices, including the $5 Footlong, while others say consistency and quality is severely lacking. Many find the ingredients overly processed to the point of disgust.
Bottom line
At the end of the day, dining out should be a treat, not a letdown. While some chain restaurants have earned their popularity, others may not deliver the value or experience you expect.
Skipping the most overrated spots opens the door to better meals and experiences elsewhere. With a little research and a willingness to try new places, you can avoid wasting your money and enjoy meals that are worth the spend.
