We're not even halfway through the year, and there is already a hefty list of retailers and restaurants that have shut down locations this year to shrink their national footprint. This pullback on physical locations is a direct result of consumers being forced into tighter budgets with less discretionary spending room.
Shoppers looking for ways to save money on groceries aren't sympathetic to the plight of billion-dollar national chains seeking a higher profit margin, and as spending decreases, many stores and restaurants have no choice but to cut back on operational costs, which often includes downsizing locations.
See which big-name brands are closing locations in May.
Buffalo Wild Wings
- 205 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Students at the University of Michigan are losing their nearby Buffalo Wild Wings after 20 years of operation. The doors closed for the last time on May 3. Manager Paul Creely confirmed, "Times are hard right now. We understand that people don't have as much money to come out and eat and it's just the nature of the beast." While this location is closing, the nearby restaurant at 3150 Boardwalk Dr. is remaining open for now.
JCPenney
- 6699 Springfield Mall, Springfield, VA 22150
Springfield Town Center is losing its JCPenney anchor store after 53 years of steadfast operation. According to parent company Catalyst Brands, the closure comes amidst lease challenges. They are unable to continue under the current lease terms and did not find another compatible location. The final day for shoppers is May 24, and significant discounts are already underway, offering up to 50% off current merchandise.
7-Eleven
- 1760 Fremont Blvd., Seaside, CA 93955
- 8484 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20910
The convenience store giant 7-Eleven recently announced it is closing 645 locations this year in order to improve profit margins, and the first to close was a Seaside, California, location that shuttered forever on May 5. It's one of five 7-Elevens in the area. Another location in Silver Spring, Maryland, closed just one day later on May 6.
IKEA
- 7900 IKEA Way, Cordova, TN 38016 (off Germantown Parkway)
Tennessee's only IKEA closed down for good on May 3. The decision to close the location was based on a comprehensive review considering factors such as market share, business performance, cost structure, and asset optimization. This location was in business for almost 10 years.
Nordstrom
- 5220 Alpha Rd., Dallas, TX 75240
The Nordstrom store at Galleria Dallas is shutting its doors for the last time on May 16. The luxury retailer released a statement that committed to taking care of employees through the transition and supporting them in finding other roles within the company. There are still going to be two remaining locations within the metroplex area and an additional 10 Nordstrom Rack stores.
Kroger
- 981 Dunbar Village Plaza, Dunbar, WV 25064
The grocery chain Kroger previously announced that it would be closing 60 underperforming locations in 2026, according to Fast Company, and the Dunbar grocery store closed earlier than expected. The closeout date was moved up to May 8.
A new Kroger Marketplace is opening on June 24 across the Dunbar Toll Bridge in South Charleston, which is meant to be a replacement but may pose a problem for shoppers who do not have a car for transportation.
Winn-Dixie
- 981 U.S. Hwy. 98, Destin, FL 32541
- 7131 N. U.S. Highway 441, Ocala, FL 34475
The grocery chain Winn-Dixie has plans to overhaul its operations to refocus primarily on the Florida market, and two locations are now undergoing closure procedures with the expectation to complete closure by sometime in May. Both locations are expected to be renovated into Aldis.
Spencer's
- 696 Belair Rd. Ste., 32A, Bel Air, MD 21014
Another mall-based retailer is shutting down, although not necessarily as part of a corporate-based downsizing. Spencer's is leaving the Hartford Mall as the location transitions to an open-air shopping plaza, and the novelty store has no plans for additional sales or relocation options. A sign on the retail establishment directs customers to nearby stores in Towson or White Marsh Mall. The store's last day is May 17.
The Barn Door Restaurant & Meat Market
- 8400 N. New Braunfels Ave., San Antonio, TX 78209
May 10 was the final day for The Barn Door Restaurant, an Outback Steakhouse rival. They've been serving San Antonio since 1953. The owners gave no reason for bringing the dining establishment's tenure to a close. However, local residents are sharing their disappointment along with fond memories of the steakhouse.
