Store closures will continue until the economy improves, and February brings the closing of many more big-name retailers. There were many closures in 2025, and this year is continuing the trend.

At best, Americans are looking for ways to save money shopping, and at worst, they are snapping their wallets shut as prices on everything soar. Chain retailers are feeling the impact and shutting down stores and locations in response.

See which big brand retailers are closing stores in February 2026 or soon after.

  • Niagara Falls, NY
  • Pittsburgh North (McKnight Road), PA
  • Franklin Mall (formerly Philadelphia Mills) Philadelphia, PA

Saks Off 5th planned to close nine stores beginning in January 2026 and continuing through February and cited a plan to optimize their store presence. They currently have approximately 100 locations in North America.

Yankee Candle

Newell Brands is the parent company of many well-known brands (including Rubbermaid, Sharpie, Paper Mate, and Elmer's), and they've announced they will be closing about 20 Yankee Candle store locations in North America. They also laid off 900 employees in December, and the closures were set to begin in January 2026. Which locations are facing shutdown has not yet been announced.

REI

  • Paramus, NJ

In October, REI announced they will be closing three locations in 2026. The NJ location will be first, closing early in 2026, with locations in Boston and New York City to follow late in the year.

GameStop

  • 300 locations nationwide

The once-popular video game retailer is kicking off the new year by closing approximately 300 locations throughout the U.S. The closures began in January and are likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

Last year, GameStop shut down 590 stores, with CEO Ryan Cohen previously blaming "wokeness and DEI" while ignoring the massive failure of the company's investment in nonfungible tokens (NFTs) trading.

Macy's

  • La Mesa, CA
  • Tracy, CA
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Glen Burnie, MD
  • Grandville, MI
  • St Cloud, MN
  • Newington, NH
  • Livingston, NJ

  • Amherst, NY
  • Raleigh, NC
  • Tarentum, PA
  • Corpus Christi, TX
  • Tukwila, WA

Macy's was once a staple of malls and shopping centers, but it has been systematically closing stores since 2024. This year, the department store has announced an additional 14 stores that will be closing across 12 states. The stores set for closure began clearance sales in January and are expected to be closed by March.

Kroger

Over the summer, Kroger announced it would be closing roughly 60 stores over the course of 2026, following a failed merger with Albertsons. The exact locations and dates have not yet been released, but could come at any time. Counterintuitively, the major grocery chain will also be opening 30 new locations this year, so there is a net loss of approximately 30 stores.

Wendy's

The fast food giant Wendy's expects to close roughly 200 to 350 locations in the U.S. throughout 2026. These closures began in 2025 and were planned over an extended timeline to land softly. The specific details are not being released, so you may not know until you drive by and notice your local Wendy's is missing.

Starbucks

In September, the coffee giant Starbucks announced it would be closing about 400 cafes across the U.S. This was announced as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan to counteract shrinking sales. An official list of locations has not been released, but an unofficial list was made public.

So far, there have been 42 locations closed in New York City, 15 in Chicago, 20 in Los Angeles, six in Minneapolis, seven in San Francisco, and five in Baltimore. Starbucks says opening and closing cafes is standard practice, and there is no additional news to share. It's likely more cafes will close in February.

Salad and Go

  • Texas, all locations
  • Oklahoma, all locations

The fast food salad chain kicked off 2026 by announcing it will completely exit the Texas and Oklahoma markets, shutting down all remaining 32 locations between those states. Previously, in September, 41 locations had been closed in those markets.

JCPenney

  • Pleasanton, CA

JCPenney will be closing a California location on February 22. The company says it's due to being unable to continue the lease terms, nor were they able to find another suitable location for that market.

Bottom line

You could expect to see continued retail and restaurant closures throughout the year as you look for ways to keep more cash in your wallet. The constantly rising prices on goods and services are putting a huge economic strain on the average American, which in turn is impacting the bottom line of businesses.

The basic cost of living is rapidly outpacing salaries, and that means the average family is forced to cut down their spending in response.
