For many Americans, KFC has been a familiar spot to eat at for years. The chain's fried chicken restaurants are a convenient option for quick meals, family gatherings, and occasional takeout nights for people looking to save money on groceries. However, like many major restaurant brands, KFC has been adjusting its locations as consumer habits, operating costs, and competition continue to change.
A new analysis from Local Falcon found that at least 312 KFC restaurants across the United States were permanently closed over the past year. The closures represent a 7.64 percent reduction in the chain's U.S. restaurant footprint based on the number of locations tracked at the beginning of the study period. The losses were not evenly spread, with some states seeing dozens of closures while others experienced little to no change. For customers wondering whether their nearby KFC was affected, these were the states and cities that experienced some of the biggest changes.
Editor's note: Closure data comes from Local Falcon's analysis of KFC's official store locator and Google Maps. Restaurant counts reflect locations identified as permanently closed between July 15, 2025, and July 6, 2026. Availability and store locations may change over time.

California saw the most KFC closures nationwide
California experienced the largest number of KFC closures during the year, with 44 locations marked permanently closed. The state has historically been one of the states with the most KFC locations, meaning even a moderate reduction created a noticeable impact.
The closures in California were spread across multiple communities. While losing a single fast-food restaurant may seem minor, these changes may affect customers who have relied on nearby locations for years, especially in smaller communities where dining options are more limited.
Texas followed closely behind California, with 34 KFC restaurants closing during the same period. Together, the two states accounted for 78 closures, representing about one-quarter of all locations lost nationwide.
San Antonio experienced the largest city-level decline
Among individual cities, San Antonio, Texas, recorded the highest number of KFC closures. Seven locations in the city were permanently closed, making it the hardest-hit market in the country.
Other major cities also experienced noticeable reductions. Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and Memphis each lost four KFC restaurants, while San Diego and Houston each saw three locations close. Several other cities, including Nashville, Sacramento, Louisville, and Columbus, lost multiple restaurants as well.
- California — 44 closures
- Texas — 34 closures
- Ohio — 18 closures
- Tennessee — 17 closures
- Illinois — 13 closures
- Indiana — 13 closures
- Alabama — 11 closures
- Florida — 11 closures
- North Carolina — 11 closures
- Washington — 9 closures
- Kansas — 8 closures
- Wisconsin — 7 closures
- Oregon — 6 closures
- Louisiana — 5 closures
- Delaware — 4 closures
- Vermont — 2 closures
- Alaska — 2 closures
Kansas lost the largest percentage of its KFC locations
While California and Texas had the highest number of closures, Kansas experienced the largest percentage decline among states with at least 20 KFC restaurants at the start of the study. The state lost eight locations, reducing its total from 38 restaurants to 30. That represents a 21.1 percent decrease in its KFC locations over the year.
Louisiana ranked second among larger states with a 16.1 percent decline, followed by Alabama at 13.4 percent and Tennessee at 13.3 percent. Oregon, Indiana, Wisconsin, Washington, and Illinois also recorded double-digit percentage declines.

Southern states accounted to many major closures
Several Southern states were affected by KFC's restaurant reductions. Tennessee lost 17 locations, placing it fourth nationally for total closures. Alabama lost 11 restaurants, while North Carolina and Florida each recorded 11 closures.
For Southern customers, this could mean older restaurants in less profitable areas may close while companies focus resources on stronger-performing markets.
Some states avoided KFC closures entirely
Despite the nationwide reduction, some states did not experience any permanent KFC closures during the period studied. Utah, which had 40 KFC restaurants at the beginning of the analysis, recorded no closures. Rhode Island, with 17 locations, and New Hampshire, with 13 locations, also remained unchanged.
Several smaller markets, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C., also avoided closures. However, these areas typically have fewer KFC locations, meaning even a small number of restaurant closures would have been a big deal.
- Utah — 0 closures
- Rhode Island — 0 closures
- New Hampshire — 0 closures
- North Dakota — 0 closures
- South Dakota — 0 closures
- Wyoming — 0 closures
- Washington, D.C. — 0 closures
KFC faces competition from other chicken chains
The Local Falcon analysis also compared customer ratings among major national chicken restaurant brands. KFC averaged 3.42 stars across rated U.S. locations, placing it behind several competitors.
Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane's ranked significantly higher in average ratings, while Popeyes and Wingstop also edged ahead of KFC. Although online ratings are only one factor influencing restaurant performance, they give insight into how customers view different brands in an increasingly competitive chicken market.
KFC's long history remains one of its biggest strengths, but newer competitors have continued attracting customers through different menu offerings, branding strategies, and restaurant experiences.
Bottom line
The closure of 312 KFC restaurants over the past year is a big change for one of America's most recognizable fast-food chains. California and Texas experienced the largest number of losses, while Kansas faced the biggest percentage decline among larger states.
For customers who are looking to go out to eat more, the best way to confirm whether a nearby restaurant is still open is to check KFC's official location finder before making a trip. Restaurant closures can be a part of larger franchise decisions, and additional changes may occur as companies continue evaluating which locations remain sustainable. Even with hundreds of closures, KFC still maintains thousands of restaurants across the country.
FAQs
How can I find out if my local KFC has closed?
The most reliable option is KFC's official store locator at kfc.com, which pulls from the company's own list of operating restaurants. Google Maps can be less dependable here, because Google sometimes applies a "Permanently Closed" label to restaurants that have simply moved to a new address. If a location shows as closed on Maps but still appears in KFC's locator, calling the store is the fastest way to confirm.
Are other fast food chains closing locations too?
Yes, and KFC is far from the biggest example. Wendy's has said it expects to close roughly 5% to 6% of its US restaurants, which works out to several hundred locations. Pizza Hut planned about 250 US closures, and Papa John's outlined roughly 200 in 2026 with another 100 to follow in 2027. Rising food and labor costs, plus a shift toward takeout and delivery over dine in, are the reasons most often cited across the industry.
Is KFC changing its menu?
Yes, in June 2026, KFC announced a global overhaul focused on boneless chicken and sauces, featuring new tenders, 20+ sauces, Dipped and Dunked menu platforms, and Kwench beverages. The rollout began in the UK and Ireland and is expanding to Australia, the US, and other markets through 2026.
