Jack in the Box may be losing some of its famous all-night traffic. The burger and fry purveyor says it's closing a host of restaurants, part of a larger effort to improve the stats of its remaining locations.

For now, though, there's no reason to assume your local haunt will be empty when you just want to go out to eat more. The closures are expected to happen over time, and the impact will vary by region. Let's look at what the company has announced and what the subtext says.

Getting Jack back on track

In April of 2025, Jack in the Box revealed its plan to shrink its stable of restaurants. The company said they'd close about 150 to 200 locations, including some that had been open for about 30 years.

About 80 to 120 closures were slated through the end of 2025, with the rest pegged for later as franchise agreements expired. The goal? Cull weaker locations and create a healthier restaurant lineup.

Why are Jack in the Box sales declining?

Jack in the Box has long built its core identity around late-night noms and guilty-pleasure indulgences. But as folks increasingly prioritize protein and healthier choices, that reputation may be working against it.

The elephant in the room: GLP-1 drugs have changed our eating habits. Some speculate that Jack in the Box needs a paradigm shift to win back customers.

Why is Jack in the Box downsizing?

Jack in the Box has several other reasons for downsizing, and closing weaker restaurants is one big way to tackle them. They're looking to cut costs and pay down debt while serving fewer customers, with pricier beef squeezing its bottom line.

This strategy was launched in 2025 by former CEO Lance Tucker. Interim CEO Mark King is also steering Jack in the Box toward a simpler, leaner business model. In short, the chain is trimming the excess so it can focus on what's working where.

How many Jack in the Box locations closed in 2025?

After announcing the not-so-good news, Jack in the Box got to work thinning the flock. The chain shuttered 12 outlets by the end of May. Before August had come to a close, 13 more had turned off the lights, followed by 47 more by December 1, 2025.

All told, 72 Jack in the Box restaurants called it quits that year, though that number was less than expected.

How many Jack in the Box locations are closing in 2026?

Jack in the Box hasn't yet put down the axe. The chain has slashed 40 locations so far in 2026, with another 10 to 20 expected to fall before the fiscal year wraps up.

Jack in the Box remains committed to the closures despite running behind schedule, citing slipping sales. More locations are expected to disappear in 2027 and 2028.

Why are Jack in the Box restaurant closures behind schedule?

Closing a restaurant doesn't mean the bills magically disappear. Jack in the Box says lease obligations have slowed its planned shutdowns because, in some cases, paying rent on an empty restaurant can cost less than ending the lease early.

The chain is working with a third-party firm to untangle those leases.

Is my local Jack in the Box closing?

There's no complete public list showing every restaurant facing closure, so it can take a little detective work to find out. The targets are pinned on underperforming locations, with individual shutdowns coming to light via local reports, closure notices, and worker layoff filings.

If you're curious about your neighborhood spot, checking local news and employment notices may provide insight. You can also use the company's store locator and work backwards.

How are Jack in the Box employees being impacted?

Jack in the Box's closures will affect workers, too. Take the Everett, Washington, location, which is set to close October 10 and lay off 24 employees: 20 team members, three team leads, and a manager.

Workers received written notice in August, with the closure detailed in a WARN filing. If up to 200 locations close, it stands to reason that plenty of employees will lose their jobs (or have already).

Is Jack in the Box in financial trouble?

Jack in the Box may be having a rough patch, but Wall Street hasn't kicked it to the curb just yet. Several big investors have added to their stakes, and the stock has bounced from its recent low.

Still, revenue has taken a big hit. The takeaway? Investors seem willing to bet on a Jack in the Box comeback story, even if they still have some work to do.

Bottom line

Jack in the Box might be closing up shop in some areas, but the bigger story is arguably what happens after the dust settles. A smaller operation could give them a chance to freshen up the brand and figure out what folks actually want.

Of course, closing restaurants comes with real costs for workers and communities, too. Ultimately, the goal is simple: manifest a smaller, healthier business that's doing better financially.
