Pottery Barn is one of the best-known names in upscale home furnishings, but its prices increasingly make comparisons worthwhile. Its Pearce Square Arm Sofa currently starts around $1,999 at regular pricing and reaches thousands more depending on size, upholstery, and configuration. Comparable contemporary sofas from retailers such as Article are often available for considerably less.
The concern extends beyond price. Pottery Barn's standard policy gives shoppers 30 days for eligible returns, while Quick Ship upholstery has a seven-day window, and custom or made-to-order furniture is generally non-returnable. Recent Trustpilot reviews also include complaints about delayed deliveries, incorrect orders, and frustrating customer-service interactions.
Crate & Barrel
Crate & Barrel has a strong reputation for attractive, modern furniture, but shoppers focused on value may find the pricing hard to justify. Its popular Lounge collection includes a two-piece sectional for about $3,698 and a deeper version around $3,928, before considering fabric choices or other configurations.
The return policy adds another consideration. Eligible items generally must be returned within 30 days; shipping charges are not refunded, and customers are responsible for return shipping. Recent Trustpilot reviews include complaints involving damaged furniture, long waits, and difficulties arranging resolutions, although the company also has many satisfied customers.
West Elm
West Elm's clean, mid-century-inspired look is popular, but similar aesthetics are increasingly available from lower-priced competitors. Its Harmony Modular Sofa starts around $2,399, while leather versions reach roughly $4,700 to $5,000. By comparison, Article recently featured sofas around $799 to $1,399 in similarly modern styles.
West Elm's policies say that most stocked items have a 30-day return window, while Quick Ship upholstery receives a shorter timeframe, and delivery fees are generally non-refundable. Recent reviews cite delayed orders, cancellations, damaged merchandise, and customer-service frustrations, making the premium price harder to overlook.
Restoration Hardware
Restoration Hardware is in an even higher price tier. Its business model also revolves around the RH Members Program, which charges an annual fee in exchange for discounts. RH reported that roughly 97 percent of core sales came from members in fiscal 2025, showing how important membership has become to the shopping experience.
That setup may be less appealing for occasional shoppers who want one piece of furniture. Recent Trustpilot reviews include complaints involving membership charges, delivery problems, customer service, and product quality, although positive experiences appear as well. At this price level, shoppers may benefit from comparing premium pieces with luxury-look alternatives before paying for the RH name.
La-Z-Boy
La-Z-Boy is known for comfortable recliners, but the company's return policy needs to be noted before placing an expensive order. Residential upholstered furniture generally has only a three-day exchange window, and exchanged merchandise may incur a restocking fee of up to 30 percent. After that window, returns or exchanges are not available under the online policy.
Recent customer reviews raise additional concerns about value. Shoppers have described defective recliners, fabric problems, repair frustrations, and expensive purchases that did not meet expectations. Those experiences are not universal, but they make La-Z-Boy a retailer worth comparing with other recliner and upholstered-furniture brands before spending several thousand dollars.
Ashley Furniture
Ashley offers a much wider range of prices than some of the premium chains on this list. Current listings include sofas below $500, numerous options between $500 and $1,000, and larger pieces costing considerably more. That makes Ashley appealing on price alone, but customers should pay close attention to what happens after delivery.
For White Glove and Doorstep Delivery orders, Ashley states that shoppers must report damage or defects within three business days, while non-damaged and non-defective items generally cannot be returned. Recent Trustpilot reviews also include complaints about damaged merchandise, delivery cancellations, warranty disputes, and quality problems. A lower sticker price may not feel like a bargain if resolving an issue is difficult.
Havertys
Havertys presents itself as a more traditional furniture retailer, but its current return terms and recent customer feedback suggest shoppers should read the fine print. Its Regret-Free Guarantee allows furniture buyers to reselect or cancel within three days of delivery or pickup if they are unhappy with color, comfort, or quality.
That brief window puts considerable pressure on buyers to make a decision quickly. Recent reviews describe difficult delivery scheduling, damaged merchandise, quality-control problems, and complaints about extra charges. One 2026 reviewer reported repeatedly receiving damaged tables and spending entire days waiting for replacement deliveries.
Ethan Allen
Ethan Allen is on the premium end of the market, which makes the brand particularly dependent on strong quality and service. Recent customer feedback is mixed, with some shoppers praising the company's designers and craftsmanship, while others report problems with defective finishes, incorrect furniture, and lengthy attempts to obtain resolutions.
For a shopper furnishing a home on a retirement or pre-retirement budget, that inconsistency matters. Spending more upfront makes sense when the quality, service, and longevity justify the premium. When those advantages become uncertain, retailers offering comparable traditional, transitional, or modern looks at lower prices deserve a serious comparison before a major purchase.
Bottom line
Shopping elsewhere does not necessarily mean buying the cheapest furniture available. The better strategy is to compare the total value of a piece, including construction, materials, delivery charges, return rules, warranty coverage, and how easy it is to resolve a problem. A $1,400 sofa with better terms may be a better purchase than a $2,500 sofa that is difficult to return.
There are also signs that shoppers have more alternatives than they once did. Article recently highlighted sofas around $799 to $1,399, while great Costco hacks can get you several large sofas and sectionals around $1,499.99 with delivery, setup, and packaging removal included on select products. Those comparisons make it harder to assume a familiar name automatically means the best value.
