Why banks are closing branches in Florida

The increased use of online banking means fewer customers are using traditional in-person options for their financial needs. In our banking behavior study, 60% of respondents said they chose an online bank because it's more convenient than traditional banking.

Around 13% of our survey respondents reported using an online-only bank, and 34% said they access their bank online daily. As more customers bank online, it only makes sense to close physical branches. In addition, as banks merge, more branches close as companies consolidate their physical footprints.

Where banks are opening branches in Florida

There are some rays of sunshine for customers in the Sunshine State, as banks also continue to open branches throughout Florida where you can grow your savings.

JPMorgan Chase announced 27 new branches in Florida, while PNC announced 30 new branches in response to the state's population growth.

Bottom line

Many banks have or are planning to close branches, which could be an issue if you prefer a little in-person help when you bank.

On the other hand, you can also try an online bank — perhaps one that offers a high-yield savings account — to see if that works for your transactions. Or, consider switching to a different bank or joining a credit union. Whatever you choose, it's important to protect your wealth.

FAQs

Is my bank leaving Florida completely?

No, the closures affect specific branch locations, not entire banks. Most institutions will continue operating dozens or even hundreds of branches throughout Florida.

What should I do if my local bank branch is closing?

You can use a nearby branch, switch to online or mobile banking, or consider opening an account with another bank or credit union if you still want convenient in-person service.

Why are banks closing branches in Florida?

Banks are closing branches because more customers now use online and mobile banking. Branch consolidations following mergers and acquisitions have also contributed to fewer physical locations.
