Quick Read
$25,000 at 4.00% annual percentage yield (APY) earns about $1,000 over one year, or roughly $83 a month.
The same $25,000 in an account paying 0.10% APY earns about $25 over one year, or roughly $2 a month.
That's a gap of about $975 a year on savings you might still be able to reach when needed.
At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to nine times more with a SoFi Checking and Savings account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
If your savings account has been quietly sitting in the same place for years, that's understandable. Money that's safe, familiar, and out of your checking account feels like it's doing its job.
But the Federal Reserve's Oct. 28 rate decision is a useful nudge to look at what your savings is actually earning. Some high-yield savings accounts are still around 4.00% annual percentage yield (APY), and that difference could be large enough to matter.
The move is simple: check your current rate, compare it with today's high-yield savings account rates, and move only the cash that fits. By the end, you'll know which dollars belong there and which dollars should stay closer.
Start with the account already holding your savings. Log in, find the annual percentage yield, and write down the APY on the account where your cash is sitting. If the rate is buried in the details, search the account page for APY or interest rate.
Next, compare that number with high-yield savings accounts around 4.00% APY, which is within today's high-yield savings market. Same cash, different account type, very different result. You don't have to outguess the Fed before Oct. 28 to use the difference in front of you.
If your current savings account is already competitive, great. If your savings APY looks closer to a rounding error, the Fed meeting is your reminder to stop letting habit make the decision for you.
Use the Fed as a prompt
The Fed matters because savings rates tend to move with the broader rate environment over time. But banks and credit unions set deposit rates on their own schedules, and they don't all move together after a Fed decision.
Waiting for Oct. 28 doesn't guarantee a better savings rate. Acting before Oct. 28 also doesn't require you to know whether the Fed might raise, cut, or hold rates. Your current APY is the number you control.
So treat the meeting as a calendar prompt rather than a market-timing puzzle. If your savings earns far less than a high-yield savings account, the rate difference exists before the announcement and could still exist after it.
We did the research for you.

Move savings, keep bill cash
Before you move a dollar, sort your cash by job. A high-yield savings account is usually a good place for money that needs to stay safe and reachable, but doesn't need to pay a bill tomorrow morning.
Good candidates include:
Emergency savings beyond the cash you need for immediate bills.
Money for a short-term goal, such as a trip, car repair, annual insurance bill, or tax payment.
Extra cash sitting in checking because moving it felt like one more errand.
Bill money due this month belongs closer to checking. Rent, mortgage payments, utilities, child care, and credit card payments that are already scheduled should stay where automatic payments can reach them. Cash committed to a closing, tuition deadline, or large payment in the next few weeks also deserves boring, same-day access.
And money you won't touch for five years or more may need a different long-term plan. A high-yield savings account is built for access and stability rather than long-term growth. That honest boundary is what makes the account useful for the right cash.
What your balance could earn
Here's the math that makes the move worth checking. Say you have $25,000 in savings earning 0.10% APY. Over one year, that balance earns about $25.
Now say that same $25,000 is in a high-yield savings account using the 4.00% APY example above. Over one year, the balance earns about $1,000.
$25,000 x 0.04 = $1,000
That formula is the quick gut check. Take your eligible savings balance, multiply it by the high-yield APY as a decimal, and compare the result with what your current account pays. As a practical one-year estimate, it shows how much the rate gap can matter.
The difference in this example is about $975 for one year. The same savings account balance is doing more work because the rate is higher.

Check the friction first
A better APY helps only if the account still fits your life, so check the practical details before you move money. External transfers between institutions can take time, which matters if you might need the money before the weekend or before a bill clears.
Access also matters. A high-yield savings account is generally meant for savings, so it may not come with the same payment tools you use from checking. If you need to pay a person, swipe a debit card, or cover a bill the same day, keep that cash in checking or in an account already linked to your payment setup.
Then check the terms. Some accounts may have opening-deposit rules, balance requirements, transfer limits, or setup steps tied to the rate. And high-yield savings rates are variable, so the rate you like today could fall later. The tradeoff is real, but you can compare again when the spread changes.
Once you know which cash belongs in high-yield savings, move it without disturbing your bill system. Leave this month's scheduled bills and a same-day cushion in the account that pays them.
Then link the accounts, complete any verification steps, and transfer the amount that passed your fit test. If the transfer page shows a delivery date, save it or screenshot it so you're not guessing later.
After the money arrives, check three things: the balance, the APY, and the next scheduled transfer or bill that could touch the old account. Alerts help here. A balance alert and a calendar reminder to review the APY next month turn a one-time move into a manageable habit.
After Oct. 28, compare again
After the Fed announces its Oct. 28 decision, resist the urge to treat the headline like a command. Your job is still the same: look at the APY on the account holding your savings and compare it with current high-yield savings rates.
If your rate drops later, run the math again. If the rate difference stays meaningful, you might decide the account is still doing its job. If the difference disappears, your money has given you a reason to revisit the setup. That's the habit worth keeping.
If $25,000 that you don't need for this month's bills earns 4.00% APY in a high-yield savings account for one year, it earns about $1,000. Leaving that same cash at 0.10% APY earns about $25. Check your APY before Oct. 28, move the savings that fit, and keep bill money immediately reachable.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
