Rising prices and shrinking portions frustrate fast-casual diners.

Fast-casual restaurants have become harder to justify as menu prices have climbed and diners already cope with increasing bills everywhere. That's why many diners have become more selective about where they spend their money.

That doesn't mean every visit to any fast-casual chain is disappointing, or that every location has the same problems. But recurring complaints about prices, portions, food quality, service, and consistency suggest some chains are facing a growing value problem.

Here are the fast-casual chains that may be getting harder to justify.

Panera Bread

For customers who remember Panera as a relatively affordable place to grab a soup, salad, or sandwich, the question is increasingly whether the once-affordable chain is still worth the money.

Consumers are increasingly frustrated by the lack of bang for their buck at the bakery chain. Reviewers say the portions are way smaller, the quality is below par, and it's expensive for no reason.

Panera has offered something of a "mea culpa" by introducing its first dedicated value menu, but customers may need more convincing before deciding the chain is still worth their money.

Five Guys

Five Guys has never been the place to go when you're looking for a cheap burger. That's fine if the food feels worth the extra money. But plenty of customers now seem to be asking whether it does.

Recent reviews complain about prices that can push a burger, fries, and a drink well past $20, along with food that doesn't always match the price. In 2024, a $24 receipt for one burger, fries, and a drink went viral, with people calling the price "highway robbery." In August 2026, a customer reported paying $44 for two bacon cheeseburgers and two small fries. Other recent reviews mention cold food, greasy burgers, and fries that weren't worth the cost.

Other recent reviews complain about greasy food, small portions, cold orders, and prices that are hard to justify.

Chipotle

Chipotle built its business around the idea that customers could get a relatively fresh, customizable meal quickly. The problem is that the price of that meal has steadily become harder for some diners to swallow, particularly when portions vary from one visit to another.

Customers are annoyed for paying more than $15 for bowls that are barely half full, while others complain that even paying for extra meat didn't result in much more food. Others have reported missing items, poor food quality, dirty restaurants, long waits, and incorrectly prepared orders.

The company has been trying to address the value question without resorting to major price cuts. Chipotle somewhat recently introduced lower-priced menu items, including a $3.50 taco and a $3.80 high-protein cup, and said future annual price increases would be modest, at roughly 1% to 2%.

A company called Freecash has compiled all sorts of quick cash tasks from about a dozen advertisers and market research companies thirsty for more data. Freecash has paid out over $13 million to users since 2019, and has over 50,000 five-star reviews on Trustpilot.

Sweetgreen

Sweetgreen built its reputation around fresh, customizable meals, but the chain has struggled to convince enough customers that its prices still justify the experience. Consumer complaints include expensive meals, inconsistent portions, and complicated pricing, while the company has acknowledged that its pricing structure could be clearer.

In March, 2026, CEO Jonathan Neman said the company wanted to simplify its make-your-own bowl pricing because customers could feel like they were being "nickeled and dimed." Sweetgreen began testing more straightforward pricing and entry-level options as part of a broader effort to create a clearer value proposition.

Noodles & Company

For a restaurant built around noodles and pasta, there isn't much room for disappointment when the bill starts looking more like a casual-dining meal. Noodles & Company is finding this out the hard way.

Customers say the chain's portions no longer feel generous enough for what they're paying. Recent reviews mention smaller servings, inconsistent food quality, and meals that don't seem to justify prices that can reach the mid-teens.

The chain is feeling the effects of these complaints and has been closing restaurants. It shut down 33 locations in 2025, ending the year with 423 restaurants in 31 states.

CAVA

CAVA has benefited from the popularity of customizable Mediterranean bowls, but those bowls can add up quickly. Once you add chicken, steak, or other extras, a meal can easily move into the $15-to-$25 range. That's not necessarily a problem if the bowl is filling and the ingredients are fresh, but some customers say that's not always the case.

Portion complaints have become a recurring theme in customer discussions, with diners posting photos of bowls they say look surprisingly small for the price. Others have complained about missing ingredients or paying extra for protein and getting less than expected.

Bottom line

If you're looking for ways to stretch your restaurant budget, you don't necessarily have to give up fast-casual restaurants. Do a little research on prices and portion sizes at different chains, use loyalty rewards and promotions, and pay attention to what you're actually getting for your money.

A few extra dollars can be worth it when the food and experience deliver, but a pricey meal that leaves you disappointed probably isn't a great deal.
