The Facebook privacy settlement
The settlement stems from a class action lawsuit alleging Facebook allowed third parties to access users' information and data without permission. Those third-parties included data brokers, political consulting firms, and other companies outside of Facebook. The lawsuit alleged that Facebook didn't monitor or enforce third-party access to users' data.
In one instance, in 2018, Cambridge Analytica reportedly improperly obtained personal data for more than 87 million users. The company allegedly used that information for political advertising to support President Trump's campaign.
Though Meta denied any wrongdoing, it reached a settlement in May 2025 once two appeals were resolved. Eight plaintiffs received $120,000, while the remaining $540 million of the settlement fund was to be distributed to eligible Facebook users who filed a claim.
Who qualifies for a payment
Anyone in the United States who had a Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, was eligible for the first settlement payment, meaning hundreds of millions of people qualified.
To receive a payment, qualified individuals had to submit a claim form by August 25, 2023. The first payments were sent out in September 2025 to eligible individuals who submitted a claim by the deadline.
Why second payments are being issued
Only about 19 million people submitted claims for the first payment, though approximately 250 million Facebook users were eligible to submit a claim. Of the 19 million people who filed claims, 17 million received the first payment, which ranged from $25 to $30.
Since so few people received payments, the court approved a second distribution of the funds that remain uncashed from that initial distribution.

How to file a claim for a second payment
The second round of payments is designated for claimants who filed before the August 2023 deadline. Those claimants must have received and successfully cashed their first payment to be eligible for the second. No new claims are able to be filed at this time.
There is no need for claimants to take any additional action or file for the second payment. Instead, the payments should be sent in batches for four weeks beginning on June 9. The second round of payments is likely to range from $5 to $7.
When to expect a payment
If you were part of the initial settlement group and received and cashed your first payment, you may receive the second payment. Payments should be issued over the next four weeks, and you should receive an email a few days before the funds are deposited. You may also email the settlement administrator, Angeion Group, LLC, at info@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com with your claim ID to check on the status of your payment.
Warnings about Facebook settlement scams
Scams are common around class-action settlements, especially when they involve big names like Facebook. Scammers may use these settlements to try to access your personal information, like your bank account details. Administrators of the Facebook settlement have warned that scammers are exploiting the settlement name.
Keep in mind that a legitimate settlement administrator won't ask you for your Social Security number, driver's license, bank details, or an administrative fee or upfront fee. If you receive requests for such information, you're likely being contacted by a scammer.
The only official website for this settlement is FacebookUserPrivacySettlement.com. If you have any questions or need to contact a settlement administrator, only use the contact information that you retrieve directly from that site.
Additional tips to protect yourself from settlement scams
Be on the lookout for other common signs of settlement scams. If you receive a notice that you might qualify for a payment, check to see if the website listed on that notice is the official settlement website.
Check the news to see if a settlement is legitimate. News articles often include links to an official website, so you are able to validate any information you've received. Sites like ClassAction.org also compile a list of current settlements that you could reference.
Be familiar with the type of information that a settlement administrator is likely to request. Your mailing address, phone number, email address, or Venmo username are all common requests, but don't give away sensitive information like your bank account details.
Bottom line
If you received the first payment from the Facebook privacy settlement, then you might be receiving a second payment in the next few weeks. Check your email and spam folders for a notice of an upcoming payment; an email should arrive a few days before your payment is deposited.
Though the second payment is small, it's still an extra bit of cash that you could put toward helping to pay for your bills.
