- Moving a $20,000 emergency fund from a big bank paying 0.04% APY to high-yield accounts earning 3.00% to 3.30% turns $8 a year in interest into roughly $600 to $660 a year, with no additional effort.
- Online high-yield accounts are FDIC-insured just like traditional bank accounts. Your money is equally protected whether it sits at a brick-and-mortar bank or an online-only one.
- Transfers between banks take one to three business days, but transfers between accounts at the same bank are typically instant, which makes access less of a barrier than most people expect.
- At the national average savings rate of 0.38% (as of 06/15/26), $20,000 earns $76 a year. The same balance could earn up to ten times more with a SoFi account. See SoFi®'s current rate.
My $20,000 emergency fund spent years at a big brick-and-mortar bank earning 0.04% APY. That worked out to about $8 a year, barely enough to notice. After I moved the money into two high-yield savings accounts, one paying 3.00% APY and one paying 3.30%, the same $20,000 now earns between $600 and $660 annually.
Nothing about my emergency fund changed except where it lives, and it's an easy way to get ahead financially.
Where the money was before
For all of my 20s and some of my 30s, my emergency fund lived in a savings account at the big bank where I already did my checking. It was the path of least resistance. Adding a savings account took two minutes, and I never thought much about it after that.
The rate was 0.04% APY. On a $20,000 balance, that comes to $8 a year in interest, about $0.67 a month. I wasn't thinking of it as a loss at the time. I was thinking of the account as a safe place for money I hoped never to need. What I didn't think about was the money I wasn't earning by keeping it there instead of somewhere better.
What the year in the high-yield account paid
After moving the money, the difference showed up immediately. Here's what $20,000 earns in a year at each of the three rates.
| Account | APY | Interest per year | Interest per month |
| Old big bank savings | 0.04% | $8 | $0.67 |
| First high-yield account | 3.00% | $600 | $50 |
| Second high-yield account | 3.30% | $660 | $55 |
I split the money between two online accounts. One is at the same online bank where I keep a checking account, so transfers between them are instant. That's where I keep the money I move in and out more often. The other holds the bulk of the emergency fund and just sits. At 3.30%, it pays about $55 a month, which is roughly seven times what my old account paid me over an entire year.
Why I waited
My hesitation had nothing to do with branch access. I wasn't worried about being unable to walk into a building. What made me nervous was harder to name: the feeling that online-only banks were somehow less real, and that money sent there might just disappear.
That concern doesn't hold up. Once I looked into it, I moved fairly quickly. Both of my new accounts are FDIC-insured, which means deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, are backed by the federal government. That's the same guarantee that applies to any brick-and-mortar bank. The FDIC doesn't distinguish between online banks and physical ones.
What finally pushed me to act was the math. $8 a year against $660 a year isn't a small difference. That's groceries for a month, a mini vacation, or Christmas covered.
The one time I needed the money
I've never had a true emergency that required a large withdrawal, but I do move money in and out fairly regularly, mostly transferring into investment accounts rather than pulling for emergencies.
It's been smooth. Transfers between my online savings and my online checking are instant, which solves the access problem for anything I might need quickly. Transfers out to an external bank take one to three business days, the standard ACH window, and that's never caused a practical problem. I've never had a transfer fail or run past the expected window at either bank.
If the three-day scenario worries you, the fix is to keep a small buffer in checking, something in the range of one to two weeks of essential expenses. That gives you immediate cash for urgent costs without waiting on a transfer.
What I'd tell someone with the same worry
Access is the most common reason people give for not moving an emergency fund, and it's also the most solvable. Here's what actually works.
- Keep a buffer in checking. I keep roughly two to three weeks of fixed expenses, like rent or mortgage, utilities, and insurance, in checking at all times. Any emergency that cash can solve gets solved with what's already liquid, without touching the high-yield account.
- Know your transfer windows. Same-bank transfers are usually instant. Different-bank ACH transfers typically take one to three business days. Start one Monday and it lands Wednesday or Thursday. For anything that can't wait, a credit card you pay in full gives you bridge coverage while the transfer clears.
- Start slow. I was nervous about moving everything at once, so I opened the account with a few thousand dollars. Once I saw it worked, I moved the rest.
- You don't have to close your old account. I still have mine. It's just not where my savings live anymore. The two don't have to be in conflict.
Bottom line
My $20,000 emergency fund still exists for the same reason it always did: a cash reserve for expenses I can't plan around. The only thing that changed is where it lives. At my old bank it earned $8 a year. Now it earns between $600 and $660, which lets me make extra money without any additional work. The money is equally safe, equally accessible, and considerably more productive.
FAQs
How fast can I get money out of a high-yield savings account?
It depends where the money is going. Transfers to an account at the same bank are typically instant or available within hours. Transfers to a different bank by ACH usually take one to three business days. For genuine emergencies, a small buffer in checking eliminates the timing problem entirely.
Is a HYSA a good place for an emergency fund?
For most people, yes. An emergency fund needs to be safe, accessible, and ideally earning something while it waits. High-yield savings accounts are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, allow withdrawals without penalty, and currently pay several times the national average savings rate.
Is my money safe in an online bank?
Yes. FDIC insurance applies equally to online and traditional banks. As long as the institution is FDIC-insured, deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, are backed by the federal government whether or not the bank has a physical branch. You can verify any bank's FDIC status at fdic.gov in under a minute.
Would You Spend Ten Minutes for $1,465?
That's roughly the year's difference on $40,000 between the national average and the up-to-4.00% rates available now. And ten minutes isn't a figure of speech. You just provide some information, like your name, address, Social Security number, and the account your deposit money's coming from. But rates are variable and follow the market, which is why the only number worth acting on is today's. Compare the current top accounts here.
