Dollar Tree customers should brace for some sweeping changes at 630 locations across the U.S. With a new pricing model, store openings, and closures, this discount retailer is shaking things up for consumers. But that doesn't mean you need to find a new way to save.

Is Dollar Tree changing the $1.25 pricing model?
Yes, Dollar Tree is gradually changing the store's classic $1.25 pricing model. According to a recent first-quarter report, the company has already converted or plans to add roughly 630 more locations to the chain's new multi-price format. This equals nearly 5,900 Dollar Tree stores.
What are multi-price Dollar Tree stores?
Some shoppers already have experience with the store's new multi-price model. But if your location is still on the $1.25 (or possibly $1.50) price track, here's what to expect.
As the name implies, the multi-price model features multiple price points. Dollar Tree's new selection of "dollar plus" items includes products in almost every department, ranging from electronics to cookware. Some of these items have an upscale appeal, such as plush throw blankets or wireless speakers.
But don't worry, you are still able to find the $1.25/$1.50 price tag on party supplies, snacks, beverages, home decor, seasonal selections, and more.
What do shoppers think about Dollar Tree's higher prices?
Obviously, customers are not thrilled about the change. In one recent Reddit post, shopper MisterZan25 shared a photo of new $1.75 price signage, writing, "Dollar Tree 'influencers' have been posting stuff like this all over Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok today. This is kind of a shock to me."
This wasn't the only comment about the new pricing model. Others joined in, complaining, "Mine had a $9.99 bath towel. This is not my Dollar Tree, haha, I hate it," and "My Dollar Tree has stuff up to $7, now. Just call it Dollar General at this point. I still go there, but I'm super picky about what I get."
The criticism of Dollar Tree's multi-price model didn't end there. Redditor Spazyk pointed out, "At this point Walmart is the better cheaper option," while user mavgeek added, "Soon to be the Two Dollar Tree. At this point just rename the brand already. It's no longer Dollar Tree. Call it Dollars Tree or Dollar Tree Plus or Multiple Dollar Tree."
Are Dollar Tree stores closing?
The company announced the closure of 75 stores in the first-quarter earnings report. While Dollar Tree expects the closures to happen in 2026, the retailer did not provide additional information on specific dates or locations.
Are Dollar Tree stores opening?
Even though 75 closings are scheduled for 2026, the company plans to open approximately 400 new stores this year. But it looks like shoppers may have to wait and see when and where they are able to shop at these stores. Like the closures, the retailer is not releasing a timetable for openings or locations.
Is Dollar Tree in financial trouble?
The recent changes to the price format and the store closure announcement don't necessarily mean Dollar Tree is in financial trouble.
Per the company's latest earnings report, net sales grew by 7.2% to $5 billion (in the first quarter only). That said, some of the retailer's expenses also increased. Dollar Tree cited specific causes, including higher marketing costs, increased general liability costs, and higher depreciation. The projected net sales for 2026, after the first quarter, are between $20.5 and $20.7 billion.
Mike Creedon, Dollar Tree's Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our first quarter results reflect continued progress across the business and demonstrate the strength of Dollar Tree's position as the preferred destination for value, convenience, and discovery."
Creedon added, "We continued advancing our strategic plan: a more relevant assortment, agile cost management, a stronger customer connection, and new store growth coupled with improved store conditions, all driving operating margin expansion and delivering a strong bottom-line performance."
Why is Dollar Tree making changes?
Nothing stays the same forever. And after 40 years, Dollar Tree is ready to evolve.
Creedon explained, "As we celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2026, we are encouraged by the progress we are seeing across the business and remain focused on making thoughtful investments in our stores, assortment and customer experience, building Dollar Tree to last for decades to come."
Bottom line
When it comes down to it, Dollar Tree still offers exceptional value compared to specialty retailers and larger department stores. Even though the expansion of the brand's classic $1.25 model to include "dollar plus" products may seem scary to loyal shoppers, the price increases shouldn't significantly affect your budget.
