With grocery and household prices still stubbornly high, writing off Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar means leaving real money on the table. Tucked in among the clutter are everyday staples that work exactly as well as name brands costing three, four, or five times as much.

So instead of feeling defeated by inflation, make these stores a more regular stop. Here's where the cheaper option does the identical job and helps your budget withstand economic downturns.

Editor's note: Prices and availability are subject to change and may vary by location.

Scrub Buddies 2-in-1 Quick Eraser Sponges

Price: $1.50 (Dollar Tree)

If there's one dollar-store dupe that converts skeptics, it's these. The white "magic eraser" pads are made of melamine foam, which is the same material as a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (a pack of 2 costs $2.99 at Target).

These scrub scuffs off walls, baked-on grime off stovetops, and marks off sneakers the same way as the name-brand one. You get two pads for $1.50, which lands at about half the price of the branded version.

LA's Totally Awesome All-Purpose Cleaner

Price: $1.50 (Dollar Tree)

This one has a genuine cult following among cleaning-obsessed corners of the internet, and it isn't a dollar-store house brand — it's a stand-alone product that also sells at other retailers, but usually for a bit more.

Home Depot sells the same-size LA's Totally Awesome for $2.98, so make your penny count at Dollar Tree and see how it can help stretch your budget further.

The 32-ounce spray looks like the expensive Method all-purpose spray that sells for around $6 at most stores. DT's thrifty option cuts through grease, countertop gunk, and bathroom soap scum, doing the work of pricier all-purpose sprays for a buck fifty.

Clear Glass Storage Bowls with Plastic Lids

Price: $1.50 (Dollar Tree)

A single small Pyrex or Anchor Hocking glass storage dish typically runs several dollars, so building a set gets expensive fast.

These 5-inch glass bowls come with snap-on plastic lids, are dishwasher safe, and handle warm or cold food — perfect for leftovers, meal prep, or bringing a side to a potluck.

At $1.50 each, you can outfit an entire cabinet for what one name-brand piece costs.

Spa Luxury Brazilian Sol Pistachio and Caramel Body Butter

Price: $1.25 (Dollar Tree)

This beauty dupe can save you quite a few dollars compared to the name-brand Sol de Janeiro that's been ever so popular for its sweet scent and cool design, but accused of being overpriced, with a 2.5-ounce body butter very similar to this Dollar Tree option selling for $24 at Ulta.

A shopper left this review on DT's website: "I've tried a few dupes of the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum cream, but DT's is the best. The other dupes have a stronger scent, but DT's has a rich cream that softens and hydrates the skin the longest. 5 stars!"

Clover Valley Frosted Strawberry Toaster Pastries

Price: $1.25 (Dollar General)

Toaster pastries are practically a blind taste test — frost them, fill them with strawberry, and most people can't tell the store brand from the original. Dollar General's Clover Valley version gives you six for $1.25, which pencils out to about 21 cents a pastry.

A box of name-brand Pop-Tarts runs $2.78 for eight at Walmart, or roughly 35 cents each. Same toaster, same breakfast, noticeably less money.

Clover Valley Frosted Flakes Cereal

Price: $2.25 (Dollar General)

Breakfast cereal is one of the categories inflation has hit hardest, which makes the store-brand swap an easy win. This 13.5-ounce box of Clover Valley Frosted Flakes is the same sugar-coated corn flake you grew up on, for $2.25.

The equivalent-size box of name-brand Kellogg's Frosted Flakes tends to run closer to $4 at the grocery store. Pour it into a bowl with milk, and the mascot on the box stops mattering.

Assorted Wide Frame Reading Glasses

Price: $1.50 (Dollar Tree)

If you're the type who loses a pair of readers every other week, this is the dupe that saves you the most over a year. Dollar Tree sells simple magnifying reading glasses in strengths from about +1.00 to +3.25 for $1.50 a pair.

A single pair of name-brand Foster Grant readers runs around $27.99 at Walgreens — for magnifying lenses that do the identical job. Buy a few, stash them in the car, the kitchen, and your bag, and stop mourning the expensive ones you keep misplacing.

L.A. Colors Color Vibe Nail Polish

Price: $1.25 (Dollar Tree)

Here's a small luxury that doesn't need to be a splurge. L.A. Colors is a real, standalone cosmetics brand, and Dollar Tree carries its Color Vibe polish with built-in hardeners for $1.25.

Compare that to a bottle of Sally Hansen at around $5.98, or a salon-favorite OPI lacquer at nearly $12, and a $1.25 manicure color starts to look like the smart money. At that price, you can grab three shades and still come out ahead.

Greenbrier Kennel Club Vinyl Dog Bone Toys

Price: $1.50 (Dollar Tree)

Dogs are famously indifferent to branding — the squeak is the whole point. This vinyl bone toy squeaks and holds up to a good chewing session for $1.50, while comparable squeaky vinyl toys at PetSmart or Chewy routinely run $6 to $10.

Given how quickly most toys get gnawed into retirement, paying dollar-store prices to replace them is the sensible move.

Get a protection plan on all your appliances

Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more.

Whether or not you’re a new homeowner, a home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short and protect you against surprise expenses. If a covered system in your home breaks, you can call their hotline 24/7 to get it repaired.

DG Health Ibuprofen 200 mg Tablets, 50-ct

Price: $1.75 (Dollar General)

Store-brand pain relievers are one of the clearest examples of paying for a label. Dollar General's own product page tells you to "compare to Motrin IB," because the active ingredient (200 mg of ibuprofen) is identical to what's in Advil or Motrin.

At $1.75 for 50 tablets, this is a fraction of what the name-brand bottle costs at the drugstore, with the same FDA-regulated dose.

Homeline Slider Gallon Storage Bags

Courtesy of Family Dollar slider gallon storage bags

Price: $2.75 (Family Dollar)

Family Dollar's Homeline slider bags do the exact job of a name-brand Ziploc slider (seal in leftovers, freeze soup, corral loose items), without the premium price. The name-brand has the same 20-count of 1-gallon storage bags for $5.69 at Staples, for reference.

The slider closure works the same way, and for something you use once and toss, the brand name on the box earns you nothing. Stock up on a gallon size for the freezer and a smaller size for lunches.

Bottom line

billtster/Adobe dollar tree retail store exterior

Dollar stores earn their bargain-bin reputation on plenty of shelves, but not on these — cleaning supplies, kitchen basics, gift wrap, and brand-name health and beauty staples where the cheaper version does the identical job.

Rather than let inflation dictate your cart, build a regular dollar-store stop into your routine for these proven categories, and remember that deals like these can also help you save more money on groceries.
