If you're looking to cut back on your monthly grocery spend, shopping at Costco is one of the better ways to do it.
With its sizable footprint — as of this writing, it has 939 warehouses globally — the odds are high that there's a location near you. But if you don't have one nearby, you may be in luck.
During the company's recent earnings call, CEO Ron Vachris confirmed that the retailer would be opening 33 new stores over the course of the 2027 fiscal year.
Here's everything we know about the chain's plans so far, and how to know if one of the budget-friendly stores is coming to a town near you.
Costco is expanding in 2027
During the September 2026 investor call, Vachris announced Costco's plans to open 33 new warehouses in 2027, in line with the company's long-term goal of opening 30 net new warehouses each year.
"Our current plan is to open another 33 warehouses in fiscal year 2027, of which 5 are relocations," he said. "We continue to see significant opportunities for new warehouse growth, including new U.S. markets, such as Buffalo, New York, and Lawrence, Kansas, infills in our more mature U.S. markets as well as international markets in which we operate."
In order to get these new stores up and running, CFO Gary Millerchip says the retailer has allocated approximately $7.5 billion in capital expenditures for the upcoming fiscal year.
Only some of Costco's new locations have been revealed
So where exactly are these new stores going to be? We don't fully know.
During the investor call, Vachris named a few broad locations, but held back on the specifics.
"For fiscal year '27, we are planning to open 4 buildings in Europe, 5 in Canada, and 1 in Mexico and have a strong pipeline of new warehouses planned for Asia, Australia, and other international markets in fiscal year '28," he said. These international locations will make up nearly one-third of Costco's total planned openings.
These warehouses will open this fall
While Costco hasn't released a full list of cities for its new stores, it has announced the locations of 14 North American stores that are set to open this October and November.
In October, openings include:
- Lee's Summit, MO, 10 SE Oldham Parkway
- The Colony, TX, 6060 Grandscape Blvd.
- Amherst, NY, 4230 Ridge Lea Rd.
- Lawrence, KS, 6200 Mercato Dr.
- Camarillo, CA, 431 W. Ventura Blvd.
And in November, Costco will be opening stores in:
- S. Meridian, ID
- Vallejo, CA
- Chandler, AZ
- NE Edmonton, AB
- Lloydminster, AB
- E. Windsor, ON
- Wasaga Beach, ON
- Newport News, VA
- Franklin, WI
The Chandler store will be a Business Center, while the other 13 will be traditional stores.
How to find out if Costco is coming to your area
If your town isn't on the list of upcoming openings, don't be too disappointed.
According to reporting from The New York Post, the chain has a policy of not commenting on locations that are more than three months from opening.
The retailer likely does this for several reasons, like having more flexibility on opening dates if there are construction delays or zoning issues.
Shoppers who want to be the first to know when the company announces a new location can keep an eye on the regularly updated new locations page.
For those willing to do a little more sleuthing, digging into your local government's planning, zoning, and building permit records can be another good way to have an idea of what's to come.
Searching terms like "Costco," "warehouse," "wholesale," and "site plan" in your county or city's commercial development application records can reveal a proposed Costco site long before the company makes an official announcement.
Not every new Costco means a new location
Another thing Costco shoppers should keep an eye out for is relocations. Vachris noted that there will be five relocations happening in 2027, although it's not yet clear where those moves will be happening.
The retailer says warehouses in established markets have a "much quicker maturity curve for sales and profitability."
For shoppers near one of those stores, the benefit can be a newer or larger warehouse without necessarily adding a second Costco to the area.
Bottom line
The next wave of Costco announcements should become easier to track as projects move within that three-month window.
In the meantime, there are a few cities we're keeping our eye on that haven't yet been officially announced by the chain. Fresno, California, has approved plans for a new location, while a proposed warehouse in Southborough, Massachusetts, is still undergoing review. Locals in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, report that construction on their warehouse has already begun.

FAQs
Can regular Costco members shop at the new Business Center?
Yes. Costco Business Centers welcome all Costco members, including Gold Star and Executive members. You don't need to own a business or purchase a separate membership to shop there.
Can you get a Costco membership before a new store opens?
Yes. You can sign up online before your local warehouse opens, so you don't need to wait until opening day to join. Costco also accepts membership applications at existing warehouses.
Is a Costco membership worth it if you only shop for one or two people?
It can be if you regularly buy items you'll use before they spoil. Compare unit prices with your usual grocery store, focus on shelf-stable staples and foods you can freeze, and factor in the annual membership fee. Splitting bulk purchases with family or friends can also help reduce waste and stretch your grocery budget.
