Note: As of Sep. 22, 2019, Citi Price Rewind is no longer being offered.
We’ve all been there: You buy something and find out a week later that it went on sale for a much lower price. Wouldn’t it be great if there were some way you could get that sale price for a previous purchase?
With Citi Price Rewind, that’s exactly what you get. This program enables Citi cardholders to register purchases made with any Citi credit card and have the program search for lower prices for up to 60 days. Though the program will end on Sept. 22, 2019, there’s still plenty of time to take advantage of what could end up being significant savings.
Here’s a closer look at how Citi Price Rewind works and how you can participate in the program.
What is the Citi Price Rewind program?
Citi Price Rewind is a free service available to Citi-branded credit card holders who have registered for online account access. Those with Citi debit cards or business credit cards are not eligible to participate in the program.
Once you make a purchase with your eligible Citi card, go to the Citi Price Rewind website within 60 days. There, you’ll sign in and search for the item(s) you purchased in the Citi database, enter details about the sale, and upload a copy of your receipt.
After your purchase is registered, the program will search through the offers of hundreds of online retailers to see if a lower price is listed within 60 days of the purchase date. If you find a lower price locally, online, or through an in-store ad, you can also submit that to the program for review.
If a lower price is approved, you’ll receive the price difference either as a check or statement credit. The maximum benefit for a single item is $200, and customers are limited to $1,000 in benefits per year.
What is (and isn’t) covered?
In general, most purchases made with a Citi card are covered under this program. However, there are some specific exceptions, which include:
- Vehicles and their original equipment. This includes boats, cars, aircraft, and tires
- Food, consumables, or items that can spoil or expire, such as fuel, batteries, medications, and personal care items
- Jewelry, watches, or items that can be made into either of these products; this includes loose gems, precious stones, metals, and pearls
- Any kind of ticket (event, lottery, airline, etc.) or travel arrangement (hotel, rentals, etc.)
- Collectibles, including antiques, coins, art, and memorabilia
- Items purchased for resale
- Living or once-living items, such as pets, plants, and taxidermied animals
- Services or advice, such as installation, labor, or repairs
- Firearms or ammunition
There are also some circumstances that might make a purchase ineligible for Citi Price Rewind. These include situations where a lower-priced item:
- Needs a service contract
- Is offered at no cost or includes a bonus, free offer, special financing, or a rebate
- Is offered through a warehouse store or other retailer that requires a membership fee
- Is being sold through an internet auction or as part of a going-out-of-business sale.
- Has been returned, used, altered, or is secondhand
The Citi Price Rewind program will end on Sept. 22, 2019. You’ll still be able to register purchases made before that date and initiate price searches until Nov. 20, 2019.
How to submit a claim
Citi recommends registering a product with the Citi Price Rewind website as soon as possible after a purchase. However, products registered within 60 days of purchase are eligible for processing.
To start a Price Rewind, log into the website and search the database for the item you’d like to register. You can use general search terms, product names, UPCs (Universal Product Codes), model numbers, and descriptions to find your item.
When you find your item, enter the date of purchase, price paid, the store or website where you made the purchase, your preferred way of receiving your price difference money, and a copy of your receipt.
This will prompt the system to automatically start tracking prices based on the retailers in the database. If a lower price if found within 60 days of the date of purchase, you’ll be notified through email as well as the website’s messaging application.
From there, you can initiate a benefit request, which will then be reviewed. The request must be initiated within 180 days of the item’s date of purchase. If you come across a lower price, either locally or online, you can initiate a benefit request by submitting a copy of an ad or other documentation showing a lower price, along with an itemized receipt of your purchase.
If your request is approved, you should receive a check within 10 to 14 business days or a statement credit within two to three business days from your date of approval.
Bottom Line
This unexpected credit card perk is one Citi customers should definitely check out. Even though there are only a few months left to take advantage of the Citi Price Rewind program, there may be potential for you to earn valuable benefits while the program lasts. You may have to scrounge for your receipts, but if the result is a statement credit or a check in your mailbox, it may be well worth the hunt.
